OT: MLB Thread

At the end of the day, "viable option" means very little without someone willing to make a brash, big money move on a stadium. See Los Angeles and the NFL.

I'm afraid Montreal is a "viable option" for disgruntled owners in other cities wanting to extract more goodies from their local government.

As was Washington for some 20 +years

But Washington built a stadium.

What. You don't have faith in the mayor?

But Washington built a stadium.

They were strongarmed by MLB into building a stadium. Then Loria saw that and wanted the same support to get a stadium built in Florida. When MLB initially declined he called their bluff and completely bottomed out his payroll to the point the Yanks starting 5 rotation was more than the whole Marlins team and Loria didn't pay a dime because the money came from revenue sharing... he even had money left over to pay his sidekick and himself a decent salary. MLB somewhat embarrassed started pressing the Miami local Gov't that they would move the team if they didn't step up even though there really was no other city in the US that could afford to do what DC did.

This is why Tampa is having trouble getting their new stadium because everyone has seen what the art dealer has pulled off down the highway. As one former President said so eloquently... "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you.
Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

No way Montreal allows that to happen which is why the odds are so against a team coming back.

I just like the fact Mtl finally has a Mayor like Drapeau, capable of "dreaming BIG".

Whether Codere can "sell that dream" to someone with actual currency remains to be seen - but if he does succeed in doing so, he'll have accomplished more than any politician in that province closing in on 50-yrs - been too long...

As long as he is not as bad as Drapeau was in predicting deficits

He should go for Nba or NFL

NBA??? Why the hell would anyone want an NBA team? An NBA team would have to compete directly with the Habs. NOBODY in Montreal is going to watch basketball when there's a hockey game on. And why would they? An NBA game is 47 minutes of tedium and 1 minute of action. And any Montreal-based NBA team would inevitably be undersized.

Geoff Molson has expressed interest in an NBA team.
