OT: Movies/TV Shows

I thought all of us had seen BB by now. Sorry about that. But literally nothing has been spoiled. Everything mentioned so far is either basically known by the first episode or never gets addressed. Hurry up and get started now.

It’s been just shy of 9 years since the final episode of Breaking Bad aired.

So you’re OK here. We’re well past the statute of limitations for anyone to have any legitimate complaints about spoilers for the show.

Brings up an interesting point I’ve had rattling around in there while watching.

I saw this video online that posed the question of whether the cancer “killed” the good Walter White and thereby created the bad Walter White/Heisenberg, or did the cancer just give the latent bad Walt that was always there an excuse to get out? The way BB progressed, it felt to me like the latter. He continued with the new persona long after he was in remission and made more money than he could ever need.

But with Jimmy, I feel the opposite. Feels like he was a good guy who had one bad luck, bad judgment incident take his life off track, but then he cleaned up his act and worked his way from the bottom to respectability, only to have Chuck put obstacles in his path and sabotage him at every turn. After getting put through one rotten circumstance after another, he just sort of gradually snaps and leaves good Jimmy behind and becomes “Saul”, even though he still seems to have a bit of a conscience.
Similarities between Walt and Kim Wexler there. With Kim's flashback shoplifting story we see that she really isn't a goody two shoes deep down. She has a subversive side and when she had to ditch that business meeting in Santa Fe in order to help Jimmy with the scam on Howard, she didn't hesitate. She screeched a u-turn on the highway without a second thought. Remember her line before turning around: "No! This is happening today!"

Both Kim and Walter White have this inner demon that they want to indulge. Walter is freed up to do it because his cancer (even while in remission) is a life-shortening eventual death sentence. And being married to Jimmy is Kim's excuse to let her freak flag fly also. This is who they really are. This is their true selves.

I read the first sentence and realized spoilers supreme were coming and skipped the rest. I just started S6 of Saul so I don’t know where things are currently.

So @LeafOfFaith finally braved the first season and got hooked?

What is your opinion? Better or as good as Breaking Bad?
Honestly, I don't know if it's just me or what, but even thought I saw BB beginning to end, and over a short couple of months of binging, I have a very hard time remembering too much about its details (in fairness it was several years ago), other than I loved it. I mentioned earlier that YouTube video on whether the cancer killed the old Walt or unlocked an existing Heisenberg. Great video that recapped Walt's journey from beginning to end, which reminded me of a lot of stuff. I really want to rewatch it to relive it all, but can't do a 60 episode rewatch of something at the moment.

Anyway, long answer to a simple question, but I loved BB a lot when I saw it, thought it was amazing all the way through. Saul was a bit repetitive at times with the Chuck stuff, making me feel like come on already, resolve this shit one way or the other, but it's a slow yet fantastic burn. So, I think I'd have to honestly say they're pretty equal right now with Saul fresh in my mind and BB faded.

BB and BCS in my top 5ish. So many good shows over the years.
In terms of awesome all the way through for me in recent years (last 10-15 years), in no particular order, I'd say:

Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul
This is Us (except for that Vietnam half season - ugh)
Lost (I didn't hate the ending like most, though all the unexplained loose ends are annoying, but quality tv)

I can't bring myself to put GOT on the list because of how much I hated the last 1.5 seasons.

Imma give breaking bad another watch after I finish the Saul program. It's gettin me in the mood. We'll see how long that lasts though. Not a big fan of watching television programs frankly and I've already seen BB twice (the second time to watch alongside another individual). But it's getting me horny for breaking bad and only then will I be able to make a proper evaluation on the two.

Hopefully said individual is married to you now.

I think I need more time before I rewatch.

I'd rather move on to something like The Boys.

Better Call Saul
Battlestar Galactica
Game of Thrones
As good as GOT was for the most part before the end, how can you forgive that last season? It fully ruined it for me.

Coincidentally, I was with my cousin and uncle last week and the subject came up, and someone we got to talking about my favorite character (Oberyn) and so we rewatched his last scene on YouTube. That was some unbelievable tv. But all ruined in the end.

I'm sort of hoping the Jon Snow spinoff, if it happens, redeems it so that I can just consider the last season a weak middle season, but I really don't think I can, not with how pretty much every story of every character ending in a way I hated. Did any of them end well? Off the top of my head, I can't think of one.

It's a television show that I watched from literally day 1. And honestly the week wait in between episodes was tough at first because interest in the program wasn't at its peak, but it eventually became awesome. The anticipation for a new episode every Sunday was fantastic.

And then when I binged it I enjoyed it too. Zeke needs to get on it of course. Similar programs in a lot of ways for obvious reasons, with breaking bad being far more suspenseful. But they're both great, I agree.
