OT: Movies/TV Shows

Movies aren't even trying anymore. I knew the latest Scream was shot in Canada. It was the fakest "New York" I had ever seen. The film, "To Catch a KIller" (Really generic title) takes place in a Baltimore where it snows non-stop apparently (It's Montreal shot in winter).
Heh, that reminds of "Rumble in the Bronx" where Vancouver was supposed to be "New York (Bronx)".

Even series have done it for years. I know right away by the architecture and the same NY license plate on different vehicles.

Man, I pity you guys.....the idea of losing my suspension of disbelief in a film, because the background city wasn't perfectly portraying the one in the movie, is a mortifying concept to me.

I dont think I could keep watching movies if I was that easily pulled out.....that's bordering on just thinking about how the actors are pretending the whole time, and never buying into them being the characters they portray.

Saw Banshees of Inisherin (I may never learn that name and aways need to look it up).

I had zero interest from the first sight of the trailer, still didn't care when it was getting all the awards attention, but last week just couldn't find one thing to watch, so I put it on.

And wow, what a great film. I love these simple stories with complex feelings at play. Really well done. My second favorite movie that I've seen this year.

The worst for me was "Major League". It's supposed to be about the Cleveland Indians but they shot the baseball scenes at County Stadium in Milwaukee. Anyone who's a baseball fan can spot the difference straight away. I'd really like to know why they didn't either just go to Municipal Stadium in Cleveland or make the movie about the Brewers.

I can always spot Vancouver in anything, including car ads. Seems like nearly all of then are shot in and around Vancouver except for that one Kia commercial currently running which was shot in Montreal and heavily edited so that you can't see any traffic cones.

Yeah the trailer looked dumb but director Martin McDonagh deserved the benefit of my doubt. I was not disappoint.

I mentioned it a while back, but if you enjoyed Brendan Gleason in Banshees, his turn in “The Guard” with Don Cheadle is every bit as brilliant. (It’s much closer to ‘In Bruges’ in vibe tho).

arguably his best ever performance imo….that and the 99’ flick “The General” are gems.

Well it would depend on the movie. For example, "The Death of Stalin", all the actors spoke with their native accents. It didn't diminish my enjoyment of the film (if anything it enhanced it vs them attempting to do a 'Russian accent'). IMHO.

actually, period pieces often take me out, especially when characters from ancient Rome are speaking UK English to each other

they might as well speak with a Brooklyn accent --at least I would find that funny.

one of my fave scenes in recent flics is from The Favourite where all those stuffy 18th century types break into hip hop style dancing

One of the more recent Star Trek: Strange New Worlds allowed Toronto to be Toronto!!! They used Canadian Money and all.

I think this is the first time in Star Trek lore where Canada exists (actually I am not trekkie enough to have made that comment).

You mean the Brad Pitt-led Troy film is not representative of how the Greeks sounded back then?

I’m taken out of bad movies that can’t create a believable world/characters I can buy into…..but if the writer/director/actors are telling a compelling enough story, I will suspend disbelief over virtually anything to buy in as much as I possibly can.

it’s something I learned over my decades as a comic book fan, realizing that “realism” in comic book art is so meaningless if the writing, characters, story aren’t up to snuff……but chicken scratch art, that borders on surrealism it’s so non- realistic…..with phenomenal writing, storytelling, panel layout, and character/world building….that just requires my imagination to elevate the imagery? That’s exponentially greater art to experience regardless of how shit the visuals are…

Okay, I’m telling on myself…..I’ve seen the favourite and I have 0% recollection of any hip hop style dancing, 😹

maybe I’m “buying in” a little too much.
