Kayfabe isn't dead.
I’m taken out of bad movies that can’t create a believable world/characters I can buy into…..but if the writer/director/actors are telling a compelling enough story, I will suspend disbelief over virtually anything to buy in as much as I possibly can.
it’s something I learned over my decades as a comic book fan, realizing that “realism” in comic book art is so meaningless if the writing, characters, story aren’t up to snuff……but chicken scratch art, that borders on surrealism it’s so non- realistic…..with phenomenal writing, storytelling, panel layout, and character/world building….that just requires my imagination to elevate the imagery? That’s exponentially greater art to experience regardless of how…and worth the extra heavy lifting to “buy into”.
You mean the Brad Pitt-led Troy film is not representative of how the Greeks sounded back then?
I can echo all that. I kinda was interested in watching Alexander too (not as interested as you!), and actually still recall Angelina Jolie as being one of the most gorgeous women ever in that film. I don't even like her anymore these days, but my memory of her in that one I still like very much. : )im such a sick fuck when it comes to giving filmmakers every ounce of disbelief suspension I can muster, in an attempt to enjoy film as much as possible……I enjoyed Oliver Stones “Alexander”….the extended directors cut.
watched it back to back one weekend, with the second viewing with audio commentary.
normally part of my willingness to suspend disbelief so religiously, is tied to also having a very snobbish filter…..so I’m not watching much shit, but Alexander is def one that slipped past the goalie there, haha.
I love historical fiction tho…..especially if an earnest effort towards a level of accuracy, was attempted.

I'm a sucker for Bernard Cromwell Sharpe series (as well as the television films staring Sean Bean).im such a sick fuck when it comes to giving filmmakers every ounce of disbelief suspension I can muster, in an attempt to enjoy film as much as possible……I enjoyed Oliver Stones “Alexander”….the extended directors cut.

The books are better than the telefilms (like most things are) as the later suffers a bit from the low budget (they weren't made during the period of the much higher budgets for such projects as GoT or even HBO's Rome). Still, I think Sean Bean makes for a convincing "Richard Sharpe".I never even knew this existed, but I’ve been taking in lots of Brit/Napoleanic history in recent years that I’d previously been pretty ignorant to….so this is right up my alley atm.
Just grabbed book one on audible to give it a whirl.![]()
I mentioned it a while back, but if you enjoyed Brendan Gleason in Banshees, his turn in “The Guard” with Don Cheadle is every bit as brilliant. (It’s much closer to ‘In Bruges’ in vibe tho).
arguably his best ever performance imo….that and the 99’ flick “The General” are gems.
The Grand Seduction is a great film.I first saw Brendan Gleason in The Grand Seduction. Then in Mr. Mercedes.
I've become a fan and am going to check out the movies mentioned previously.
The Grand Seduction is a great film.
Dawson for me is one actresss where i can see myself absolutely loving or not really digging in a project depending on the role.yeah I’m not an Angelina guy in the least (I always found it odd when she was America’s sex symbol there for a minute)…..but even I gotta concede she was pretty damn hot in that, despite how fucked up her character was.
Rosario Dawson too.![]()

Yup, i presume it just comes down to her not wanting to turn down some projects that are either wrong for her or just bad in general.completely agree…..she can be downright bad, but then in Dopesick was pretty fantastic.
Oh yeah the mountains in the background LOLHeh, that reminds of "Rumble in the Bronx" where Vancouver was supposed to be "New York (Bronx)".
Sometimes it can be a sign the movie isn't grabbing you. Some of my fav films ever have flaws that I ignore.Man, I pity you guys.....the idea of losing my suspension of disbelief in a film, because the background city wasn't perfectly portraying the one in the movie, is a mortifying concept to me.
I dont think I could keep watching movies if I was that easily pulled out.....that's bordering on just thinking about how the actors are pretending the whole time, and never buying into them being the characters they portray.
I fucking can't stand when they do shit like that. Sorry, but people in the 18th century weren't woke so tell the director to just deal with it and stop casting black people to play courtiers to the Queen of England because I'm not buying it.actually, period pieces often take me out, especially when characters from ancient Rome are speaking UK English to each other
they might as well speak with a Brooklyn accent --at least I would find that funny.
one of my fave scenes in recent flics is from The Favourite where all those stuffy 18th century types break into hip hop style dancing
What a miserable person you are.I fucking can't stand when they do shit like that. Sorry, but people in the 18th century weren't woke so tell the director to just deal with it and stop casting black people to play courtiers to the Queen of England because I'm not buying it.
Shit, even today the idea of black people in the House of Windsor is practically unthinkable. Just ask Megan Markle.
