OT: Movies/TV Shows

now that I think about maybe i think Mann is just not very good overall.

I'm actually surprised now i look back at his greatest hits and they're all movies that i walked out dissappointed and expected better from - Last of the Mohicans, Manhunter, Heat, Miami Vice, Public Enemies.

I think Collateral was good, and Ali and the Inside probably very good. But other than that mostly dissappintments.

Though at the same time, at least none of those movies were bad.

well maybe Public Enemies. That was pretty bad.

Have only seen Heat once, in the theater, and thought it was fantastic. Would like to watch it again to see how it holds up, but I think that scene in the coffee shop was universally praised at the time, and rightly so.

Isn't Manhunter good? I remember a film buff friend raving about it, but I never got around to watching it. I didn't like Last of the Mohicans very much, but Collateral and Ali are really good.

the scene in the coffee shop was a dud unfortunately. even worse, it was shot pretty much entirely in closeups which means you're not even really seeing an actual two-man scene. I think in the end the heist /shootout scenes were the standouts.

Manhunter isn't terrible but Silence of the Lambs makes a mockery of it by telling the same-ish story insanely better. Not even the awesome Brian Cox could make it sing. Also, William Peterson is just a terrible terrible actor that ruins every movie he's in. including Manhunter and the above mentioned to Live and Die in LA. He's even an absolutely terrible Pat Garrett in the terrible Young Guns II and I choose to blame him for it because Young Guns is so fucking good.

I didn’t know it was possible to tear William Peterson apart for his acting and not even mention how shit CSI is. He does indeed suck though

‘Thief’ was pretty awesome, (and clearly a big influence on NWR for Drive, but I’m kinda shocked how much I agree with this claim overall.

I thought I was a Michael Mann fan, but when you go flick by flick it is an awful lot of good movies that feel short of being great, and then a ton of shockingly bad duds.

He does film LA like no one else tho, I’ll give him that.

Collateral is a movie you can watch over and over. That club shooting is just amazing. And it looks so good,
Also, Miami Vice is criminally underrated.
The Insider is great (Although quite made up and not a "True Story")
The man (Pun intended) is a master filmmaker.
