OT: Movies/TV Shows

Can you imagine Flash if it didn't have the Batman scenes? Considering what it is with those scenes, just yikes.
Just have Robin instead - old fanfilm trailer:

Think that fanmade "trailer" cost the director/actor who played "Grayson" about $20,000. The woman who played Catwoman was Kimberly Page - ex-wife for professional wrestler "Diamond Dallas Page". Considering the 'shoestring' budget, I don't think it's all that bad.

Batman in Flash def played a huge part in me enjoying it as much as I did.

…and yeah it’s insane they made Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne such an emo, given he’s shedding the Edward character…real weird choice.

Thankfully he was Bats 99% of the movie.

Pattinson was starting to get cool. I liked him in Tenet a lot (even though I'm not sure if I loved Tenet - another trippy movie that may or may not make sense, I have to rewatch it, but it was a cool experience). So, I was holding out hope he'd be a cool Bats, but really as soon as I saw the trailer, I was like nah, not vibing for me as Bruce. And really, I can't separate Bats from Bruce - when I look at Bats in that film, I see emo Patts.

TIFF was very accessible when I first started going 25 yrs ago. Incredible films, from low budget to Hollywood vanity projects, from all over the world.

Then they literally started raising ticket prices $1-2 every year, became fully entrenched in the LA hype machine, so now one has to pay $55 dollars to watch a movie from the nosebleed seats at Roy Thompson just to hear how Dustin Hoffman really enjoyed working on his new film

Just watched Across the Spiderverse. I’m usually not the biggest fan of the superhero stuff but man I really love this and the first one of these animated ones.

You don’t miss seeing 20-30 dope films per fest?

Good point. I miss that version of TIFF. (Though 10 of those 30 films were duds, that’s part of the discovery process when the price is right)

I don’t miss going to TIFF 2.0 (corporate galas with a few cool shit programmed by the old school film buffs) which I attended for many, many years

To be fair to TIFF, the entire industry changed.
Without that solid VHS rental stream, the indie genre withered away. I’m not sure how a Quentin Tarantino gets his career off the ground now with the same ease.

I’ll never forget seeing Reservoir Dogs at the Montreal New Cinema Fest with Tarantino opening the door telling us “Hope you enjoy my film” and thinking “I hope so too”

Yeah that would be incredible, I’ve never experienced that myself….but getting to go to that many films ‘blind’ and having 15-20 of them being good/great, would be a blast.

He definitely wouldn’t if he refused to adopt digital, (obvious statement is obvious), but if a film like Tangerine as one example can be made for $100k, and find its market, I’d imagine he’d have found a way to make it happen.

….overall tho, you’re absolutely right that a fuckton of classic indie films, would never be made or become what they were, today.

I’m impressed I’m only learning this now….I think I’d have mentioned it every time Tarantino was brought up in this thread.

I’ll tell you how. By screening his film at Tiff and other festivals. One of my producer clients is there right now and he’s basically inaccessible. He stays for the entirety of the festival, not just the first few days when the masses are there for the parties and the networking, and he sees movies all day long, usually around 50 of them. As many as he can see. He loves film obviously, but really what he’s doing is looking for the next Tarantino to write or direct a project, or some indie or foreign film that flies under the radar that he could remake.

He’s had a pretty amazing career and great results at the festivals. He saw a foreign film at Tiff a few years ago, and we went and got the remake rights, and it’s now set up with big names attached and likely going to be shot as soon as the strike is over. He also got really into a young writer/director at another festival and got his next script set up and ready to be shot soon too. So these festivals still serve their purpose for those who are still using them for their intended purpose, even though they’ve become a party scene.

Every year I want to join, and every year I’m late to move and the cost triples on me, and I’m not naturally a huge fan of the travel experience (the planning and actual travel part kills me), so I just end up sitting it out. I’d really like to go to Sundance though, and I might this year since a client in the industry bought a home in Utah a few months ago, which would soften the travel annoyance for me.

I mean you don't have to go to festivals to see those flicks so you're only going to tiff to see and be seen. Which is fine.

TIFF was so much fun back in the day. I haven't been there for quite a while and definitely miss it.

I still remember looking through the listings book and finding a raunchy comedy. I thought this seems interesting for a film festival, so convinced a bunch of people to go and see ... Clerks. Major laughs, obviously.

Kevin Smith answered a few questions after, then we went up and talked to him. Still have my autographed ticket.

since I’d always see the best films from the festivals at the art house theatre in Vancouver, I just viewed the festivals as my own personal taste makers who are sifting out the shit stuff, so I have a better chance of seeing a great flick when I hit my indie theatre.

I’m a snob, but I’m a lazy snob.
