OT: Movies/TV Shows

I don’t want to rehash old topics, but I rewatched ‘Thin Red Line’ over the weekend, and yeah it’s a goddamn masterpiece.

still just incredible how visually stunning it is 25 years later…and some of the performances, particularly from Nolte, and Elias Koteas are brilliant.

Also found it surprisingly more linear & coherent in its storytelling than I’d recalled. I think I had retrofit my memories of it, with some of the more meditative open to interpretation elements of ‘Tree of Life’

….also found the narration to be pretty necessary, so you can hear the internal philosophies & belief systems they each cling to to survive their reality. (and yes, some of that means hearing some pretty base/ordinary philosophy…..as you’d expect amongst a random group of GI’s…to me that’s a feature, not a bug).

I can see it’s not for everyone, and it’s certainly not as adrenaline pumping entertaining as Dunkirk, 1917, Saving Private Ryan….but to me it’s a much much more interesting look into what the on the ground lived experience of war, might be like.

…but even just as a visual experience alone, it was fucking primo. Loved it.

just finished this and really enjoyed it….don’t think it’s for everyone, but if you liked ‘Enemy’ or ‘Prisoners’ this has a similar chilling vibe to it as those two Denis‘ flicks…..also found out after it’s based on a real life case out of Australia.

on Netflix and well worth the watch.

I liked that movie as well.

That reminded me of "Coming Home in The DarK". That's also on Netflix and was a festival film made in New Zealand. Really well-acted and disturbing given how well made it is.

I liked that movie as well.

Love that the entire plan the police employ is famously known as a Canadian invented operation, called “Mr. Big”…..they use the Canadian method to the letter in the film, as well.

From the first encounter with Paul, to the hand off to Edgerton’s character, all the way through to the final boss. The rationale they use for why he needs to divulge it, everything……all first done in Canada in 1965.

I read it’s been successfully used in like 350 cold cases in Canada, since.

Also it’s illegal in the US & UK…but fuck that, it’s dope as hell.

After shitting all-over Oppenheimer, I must say, I watch Insomnia again and what a great thriller it is. I like it better than the original in fact.

That’s based on the novel by John Williams, who wrote my all-time favourite novel “Stoner”.

all three of his main works are genius. ‘Stoner’ ‘Butchers Crossing’ and ‘Augustus’.

He’s like John Cazale, small body of work, but every one is a masterpiece.

cool. i will check them out.

unfortunately the reviews say the movie doesn't quite catch the depths of the novel, but looks pretty.

I don't know how the fuck I'm gonna be able to watch or read all this good shit you guys are recommending.

Keep them coming.

just make sure you get TCM on your cable package and PVR anything that looks interesting.

I do the streaming deal and have been able to find pretty much everything that has been discussed that interests me.

Finding the time to watch is the biggest problem. I'm retired but I can't just sit around watching shit all day, gotta keep moving and doing stuff.

Three or four hours a night is about all I can watch, and now, those bastards in blue and white are about to start their shit again.
