OT: Movies/TV Shows

Nope. Full attention on one thing only, miss to much otherwise.

think you touch on a valuable thing when it comes to sports, that’s often lost in the modern era of second screens, PVR’s, ability to pause when needed, or watching after the fact, fast forwarding commercials or between stoppages in play.

There’s a certain rhythm and pacing to sports that impacts the drama, and when it’s broken it just isn’t quite the same.

Me and @Deckie007 were witness to a wild comeback in soccer over the weekend, and so much of the drama in the final minutes was specifically tied to the extreme amounts of time wasting the opponents were implementing to try and run out the clock almost from the minute it kicked off……so every time they had a dead ball stoppage they’d waste more and more time, and there began to be a momentum to the frustration and tension one felt because every extra wasted second felt longer and longer and more and more painful….as you felt the chances to come back and tie the game ticking away.

So when the refs stuck it to them by having 12 full minutes of extra time, there was a real rush in the moment, and the thrill at 90 + 8 when we scored the tying goal, was directly influenced by that constant building of tension over the prior hour, and only more so when we scored again at 90 + 10.

Watching on replay, or having paused for bathroom breaks, or fast forwarding through half time…..any of that breaks up the natural pacing of watching it live, second by second.

It’s still a 9.5/10 experience obviously….it’s just not quite that 11/10 you get when you watch it live.

Just like with movies…..if you’re on your phone, or taking bathroom breaks, or pausing for 30 minute to take a phone call….High Noon will still be an amazing movie, but you’ve broken that tension being build as the clock ticks closer and closer to 12:00, and Gary Cooper has to face his destiny.

it’s a small thing, and we can all watch how we want obviously…..but I think there’s definitely something valuable to watching live, and only watching the game itself.

It helps when jays games have been unwatchable pain tho.

Yep… also in American football so much of the stoppage time adds to the drama… what will the OC call, will the D bring pressure?

Or how the hell did he make that catch? I need to see it again 5 more times with different angles.

I’ve watched a few NFL condensed games (45 mins) during my travels and while it was fun, it also felt disjointed

When I’m in BC some EPL games start at 4am, so sometimes I’d record it and watch it when I woke up….but even then, despite having my phone off etc….just that underlying knowledge I’m not watching it in real time with the rest of the world…..it just isn’t quite the same.

99.9% of it is, but there’s still a pea under that mattress somewhere.

God only knows what the pea under a Tottenham mattress is.

4am is too early for sure

I don’t mind starting an NFL game 45 minutes late, fast forwarding until I catch up to live action (which happens very quickly). It feels like “cheating” but is oddly satisfying

4am is too early for

at the same time, getting up at that hour before anyone else is awake…..making a full Chemex of coffee and taking it all in while the rest of the world around you sleeps, also has its own charm.

I used to be addicted to Japanese MMA and would get up at ungodly hours to watch Pride FC or Shooto events…..and there was definitely an added kick to watching non-UFC MMA, at those crazy hours, as well. Especially when there was some crazy match you were particularly hyped for, whether it was a Fedor fight, or a tournament, or Sakuraba vs a Gracie.

This is the most Montana thing I've ever read

it also helps to figure out which movies and games will need full immersion and which don't.

during the jays game last night i was able to crush both The Human Monster (starring Bela Lugosi) and Diary of a Madman (starring Vincent Price) and pretty sure I got as full an experience as I needed. Both good not great btw - neither nearly as good as The Pit and The Pendulum (feat V.Price) i crushed during a jays game earlier in the week which was actually fairly terrifying for a classic horror flick.

it helps that i'm also trying to catch up on mediocre (even poor) genre classics as much as the truly great ones.

sometimes i'll try a dual experience and shut off the movie right away because it'll obviously need more attention.

That trailer does nothing for me.

Feels like it’ll be one of those 3 hour plus snoozefests.
Yeah, trailer was not very good at all.
I'm actually someone who finds majority of Scorcesse movies last 20 years overrated, but I'm happy he's trying something he has not done before. Love the story.

Weird combo of overrated and underrated movies from Scorcese the last 20 years imo.

Overrated: The Departed, Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman
Underrated: The Aviator, Shutter Island, Hugo, Silence
