OT: Movies/TV Shows

think you touch on a valuable thing when it comes to sports, that’s often lost in the modern era of second screens, PVR’s, ability to pause when needed, or watching after the fact, fast forwarding commercials or between stoppages in play.

There’s a certain rhythm and pacing to sports that impacts the drama, and when it’s broken it just isn’t quite the same.

Me and @Deckie007 were witness to a wild comeback in soccer over the weekend, and so much of the drama in the final minutes was specifically tied to the extreme amounts of time wasting the opponents were implementing to try and run out the clock almost from the minute it kicked off……so every time they had a dead ball stoppage they’d waste more and more time, and there began to be a momentum to the frustration and tension one felt because every extra wasted second felt longer and longer and more and more painful….as you felt the chances to come back and tie the game ticking away.

So when the refs stuck it to them by having 12 full minutes of extra time, there was a real rush in the moment, and the thrill at 90 + 8 when we scored the tying goal, was directly influenced by that constant building of tension over the prior hour, and only more so when we scored again at 90 + 10.

Watching on replay, or having paused for bathroom breaks, or fast forwarding through half time…..any of that breaks up the natural pacing of watching it live, second by second.

It’s still a 9.5/10 experience obviously….it’s just not quite that 11/10 you get when you watch it live.

Just like with movies…..if you’re on your phone, or taking bathroom breaks, or pausing for 30 minute to take a phone call….High Noon will still be an amazing movie, but you’ve broken that tension being build as the clock ticks closer and closer to 12:00, and Gary Cooper has to face his destiny.

it’s a small thing, and we can all watch how we want obviously…..but I think there’s definitely something valuable to watching live, and only watching the game itself.
Oh thanks for ruining the game. I had it recorded.

Just for a change last night I wanted to watch something light and comical that I could get some mindless entertainment from.

Searched for comedy/western and Cat Ballou came up. I've probably seen it half a dozen times over the years but it was right there in front of me so I cued it up then went out on the front porch and smoked a small bowl.

Had to pause it several times due to laughing my guts out. Might have been the weed but I was thoroughly entertained.

"Highly" recommended.

I wouldn't recommend "Paint Your Wagon":

Now I respect that Eastwood was trying to go beyond his usual "man with no name/gunslinger" roles at the time but....

For those that don't like "traditional westerns", I would suggest watching the following:

I used to catch ‘My Name is Nobody’ on tv all the time as a kid, and it’s always been a favourite comedic western ever since. Terence Hill, Henry Fonda, and a baller of a theme song from Morricone….

Only just learned googling for the poster & theme song, that it’s based on a story idea from Sergio Leone…he even came to the states to be on set a few days, and ended up taking over directing for a day when primary director Tonino Valerii was out sick for the day,

I know it was on Amazon Prime for a while, not sure if it still is…..but I think people have uploaded the full movie to YouTube as well.

it’s a beaut.

I have always been intrigued by the movie "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" but never had a chance to watch it. Directed by Sydney Pollack, solid list of Oscar nom's with only one win. Noticed it on my VOD last weekend and gave it a watch. What a solid picture, that really holds up well to modern film. The bleak nihilism certainly holds well to the current feelings of society. Working so hard when behind the scene's it's absolutely stacked against you.

Gig Young (from the Bruce Lee, Game of Death) was terrific. Highly watchable.

Not sure if its just 'urban legend' or not but Sergio Leone apparently toyed with the idea of having all three main leads in "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" get gunned down by Bronson at the beginning of "Once Upon a Time in the West":

To continue the "Westerns" subject matter, one of the coolest TV series intros:

I don't believe the show had the necessary permits to film that so they just did it "guerilla style" I didn't realize until much later that TV show essentially just "borrowed" a fair bit from the Eastwood flick "Coogan's Bluff".

it's funny because i actually know that movie by the italian name - Il Mio Nome E' Nessuno. I don't know why. I think maybe i just liked the word Nessuno as a kid and it stuck with me.

the barber shop scene is great.
