Besides, gunshot wound is one of the leading causes of death among black Americans as is complications from diabetes so it's a joke but solidly based on objective fact.

I saw this video and realized that I never recognized the subtext and veiled subplot when I first saw the movie. I had always assumed that the Hunt character had given Hanks up for dead and simply moved on. It never occurred to me that she was already sleeping with the Chris Noth character before Hanks left for Russia.

The fact that the other man was played by Chris Noth should have been a spoiler in and of itself now that I think of it.

I always dismissed the pre-deserted island scenes as just filler to establish the characters, not to really hint at anything like this video describes. There's a sense that the movie doesn't really start until Hanks is on the island and that the viewer can pretty much forget about the details of whatever happens prior to that.
