OT: Movies/TV Shows

Bill Simmons podcast “The Rewatchables” had an episode dedicated to “The Talented Mr Ripley” which was fantastic.

Also Phillip Seymour Hoffman is pretty amazing in the flick, so prob worth revisiting just for that alone
Scott was WAY too old for the part though. But overall pretty good series. Liked the Damon movie better (One of my modern day favs).
We watched the movie last night. It's crazy how I basically didn't remember any of it. I really enjoyed it this time. Since I had no previous love for the movie and I was basically going into both blind... it's a toss up on which I preferred.

Obviously, I haven't read the book, so I don't know which is truer to the original story, but they do have some differences. Nothing too significant, plot-wise... but Scott's portrayal of Ripley is certainly colder and more calculating than Damon's, who killed Dickie almost accidentally and was clearly battling with the guilt of that, and subsequent murders. Scott really never showed any remorse at all.

I looked into it and there were 4 more books with Tom Ripley, so hopefully we see more seasons of Ripley.

The movie is one of so few I would name a classic among films made last 25 years or so. The beauty of the European locations is why I think the B&W in the series is an error. Damon was a better fit as Ripley IMO and the right age. Too bad Anthony Minghella died. He was a fantastic director.

Maybe it's just the video quality, but I honestly found myself enjoying the beauty of the location more with the series than the movie. It looked amazing. That said, it could have been even better in color.

I also didn't have a problem with Scott's age. Everyone seemed to be in the same age group and there was no indication that they were supposed to be younger. I'm sure, in the book they were supposed to be in their mid 20s. The father even says that Dickie is "too old" to be behaving this way, so everyone appearing to be in their mid 30s didn't feel wrong.

I get where you'd take issue with Scott v Damon due to age, and that's fair. At least they're both great actors. I actually find the bigger "problem" to be that the rest of the cast is just so much better in the movie. Not that Fanning or anyone else is/was bad, and of course Bokeem Woodbine is the tits. However, the cast of the movie really is incredible. Damon, Law, Paltrow, PSH, Blanchett and even guys like James Redhorn and Philip Baker Hall are always good.

if you read the whole interview (which most people don't because why not go straight to X to express outrage asap) Jerry talks about how Larry was able to do what he wanted because he had established himself previously....

Anyway, I'm not a big Jerry fan but the full interview is worth a read for anyone who takes comedy seriously

I literally thought you were using it as a catch-all and it never crossed my mind that you were referring to Twitter until I saw Zeke's post.

I do feel like there aren't many good comedies anymore. Is that the reason? I don't know, maybe. Larry David was on a podcast recently and was basically like if we have to overcompensate for a while because of the hundreds/thousands of years of oppression, he's all for it. His delivery was a bit better of course.

Apparently they are not even trying… no new sitcoms were picked up for the fall season among the big four US networks.

It’ll cycle back.

I haven’t watched them in a while but pretty sure South Park and It’s Always Sunny still push the boundaries… grandfathered like Larry
