OT: NFL Thread

I’m not saying they shouldn’t get paid more but the idea that they work as Walmart greeters from Monday to Friday is urban legend dogshit that gets repeated over and over
So not quite like CFL players

I couldn't disagree more. I have way way less issues with referees in hockey than football, but a lot have to do with the outsized influence that NFL refs have on the games. Every week I see NFL refs have major impact on the game outcomes with absolutely terrible decisions. In hockey it might happens a few times in a season, for the most part we just complains about penalties, too strict or too loose, but the teams at least have generally an opportunity to make up for it. Not so much in football.

I actually think mlb officials are the best (but robot umps are still needed).

I'm amazed at how often the super slo mo proves the ump right

But the holds and PIs are way too subjective.

and I even have empathy for the refs that some of their hold penalties might look soft, but are the result of warnings having been given, if a guy was walking a fine line…so then a soft one is called as an accumulation penalty. Perfectly fine with that.

but missing the really egregious ones on huge drives of the game, or that are directly the cause for a running lane being wide open, or a sack not happening…..that’s gotta be called consistently.

There was also a really obvious hold for about 3 secs that wasn't called on the Mahomes 25 yards run in the 4th.

that one was batshit, especially given that it happened so close to the screen for those watching at home. He even had him in an arm bar at one point.

saw a flag had been tossed tho, so was relieved the run was coming back…..nope, they gave a penalty to CJ Mosley, and tacked another 5 yards onto the run. 🤣

made that BS hold call on Sauce, that took back the INT that much more frustrating to think about.

Yeah for all the flak MLB umps get, everyone overlooks how batshit insane it is that they’re SO accurate, despite not having that imaginary strike zone in front of them that we have.

easy for us to call from the couch when we have that imprinted on screen…..but the way some of the nail pitches that just catch a corner, and how consistently they do, is unbelievable. Let alone at the speed it’s occurring at.

I think NBA & NHL refs are pretty goddamn incredible too, again given the speed it’s happening at…..NFL is the worst, because as someone said they have the biggest influence and most consistently blow massive calls that ostensibly decide games.

(just consider how gargantuan an impact it is for every drive that’s mistakenly given a fresh set of downs, that was otherwise punting…..and then results in a TD…..and that’s far from infrequent.)

more I think about it, the more I think all the other leagues blow NFL out of the water…..

NFL refs definitely have the most impact in the game with their calls, that's undeniable. An NFL game has +/- 80 total plays a ref can have an impact on, whereas a hockey game? There's literally hundreds of instances a referee can have an impact and in the best of scenarios, a decision that leads to a penalty from the referee results in a goal 25% of the time, whereas a ticky-tack holding penalty on the offensive line can kill a drive. There's just a canyon of a gap between the two.

The NFL is also the league that can brag about "getting it right" the most often, they have adjusted the rules based around trying to get it right as much as they can. The NHL, though? lol

What I like in my referees: Consistency, regardless of the time in the game, regardless of whether it's the regular season or the playoffs. The rules are the rules, and a penalty is a penalty. It's why I've prefered the inferior referees in international hockey over the ones in the NHL.

The NHL & NBA don't get credit from me for their consistency of bad work just because their jobs are more demanding. They both have a rulebook and arbitrarily choose not to call penalties (or flat out enforce the rules), and you expect me to give them credit for that?

Also: Can someone remember the last time an NFL referee was trending on Twitter? I'm not an NBA fan, but I know who Scott Foster is. I know who he is because I see him trending way too often on Twitter, and it's not for love and praise of his work.

Since we're discussing it---

1- NFL
2- MLB - But a gap between the two because the MLB's umpire union allows people like Joe West & Angel Hernandez to continue getting work until they choose to quit.

3-4- NHL / NBA- I don't give a shit about basketball beyond the NBA finals, but NHL referees are fucking terrible on purpose.

Tough to blame nhl refs for doing what they are told....

NHL referees are kinda consistent, I know exactly how they’re going to call games depending on the period, whether it’s early in the season or late, or if it’s the playoffs. That’s mostly directives. They’re told to manage games, not to apply the rule book. That’s mostly a league issue.

I fully agree that the NFL is doing a better job at trying to fix those issues. But given the importance of those calls, you’d think they’d be more careful to get them right. Every week there is multiple egregious cases trending on twitter with bipartisan support. It’s by far the most frustrating sport when it comes to refs (except maybe judges in boxing).

They get a lot of calls right but it doesn’t matter when they blew crucial ones that completely change the game.

Wow, the state of NFL football in NYC is just pathetic.

Daboll threw his tablet after showing Daniel Jones he had a man open in the end zone when he threw his goal line pick

Stuck with 70M of dead cap space with Jones next yr

The reports on the NYG's plans last off-season didn't make much sense, either.

They wanted to franchise Daniel Jones, which is a good idea. One year, prove it or move it. No issue. They wanted to give a one year deal to Jones.

...because they wanted to give a long-term contract to their often-injured running back, Saquon Barkley. (What?) And then negotiations failed.

...So because they weren't able to get a deal done with Barkley, then franchised him and gave Daniel Jones a long-term deal instead.

What kind of fucking buffoonery is this?

But I sure am glad the Giants keep putting plasters over their wounds by just throwing money at their problems. I'm definitely glad they haven't drafted well on their offensive line beyond Andrew Thomas, nor have they drafted any wide receivers, or much in terms of DBs.

Makes me very happy.

Jones should wire a few million different dollars to defensive coordinator Ed Donatell (Vikings) whose soft coverage made Jones look great twice last year

Daboll had a golden hoseshoe last year, this year he is being fitted for cement shoes

Major blunders but the NFL is the best sport to fix them easier and sooner
