OT: NFL Thread

I’d love if refs were paid to study the game styles of players & teams they would be reffing that week so they were particularly well versed in what to look for…..as well as any other supplementary work to help them perfect their craft.

also, use whatever profits the league is getting thanks to legal gambling, and use some of that money to pay them…..since the refs being even sharper, only benefits the gambling wing of the sport.
Paying them more would also de-incentivize refs from accepting bribes to throw games. Of course, the NFL took care of this by telling the refs in advance how they would like to see the game turn out. Pretty hard to throw a game when your employer has already told you how it's your job to make sure it ends a specific way.

I hate bagging on refs cause it’s so emotionally fuelled 99% of the time, and we do it while ignoring the identical call that went our way earlier in the game that prob had = impact on the outcome.

BUT I’d love to see an impartial data driven analysis of impactful penalties called in the fourth quarter of tight games, and how many sketchy ones go the way of the more marquee players & teams…..I’m not saying the ref threw that flag last nice, cause he saw Mahomes had thrown an INT, and the league is financially motivated to have the Chiefs win that game for playoff seeding purposes, versus the Jets getting one that prob meaningless.

….but goddamn it felt like that in the moment, 🤣, and always seemed to happen in the Pats favor in so so many games, that I’m just curious what if anything the data would show.
Why not say it? it's probably true.

I recently saw a clip of some ex-NBA players talking about how notorious the NBA is for managing outcomes. This particular player was with the Sixers a few years ago and he spoke of a playoff series against the Celtics where Philly forced a Game 7 with the winner going on to meet LeBron and the Heat in the conference finals.

He was all excited about playing in a Game 7 but a veteran teammate said to him "You do realize that for us to advance we will need to beat Boston by 15 just to win by 1, right? When asked to explain he said simply "The NBA isn't in the basketball business, they're in the entertainment business. So ask yourself, if you were just a casual fan which match-up would you rather watch: us against the Heat or Boston against the Heat? I PLAY for the Sixers and even I would rather watch the Celtics. So enjoy Game 7 and enjoy a million memories but we aren't advancing because that's not the way the NBA runs its business."

The NFL is no different. They want to manage outcomes. They want their marquee players to do well because they drive ratings. Look at all the prime time games that were going to feature the Jets this year. A team based in the largest market with a quarterback that even non-fans have heard about. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the league itself that engineered things in such a way so that Rodgers would sign there and not some other small market.

In MLB this is the first year in 3 decades where there's no New York teams, no Red Sox and no Cards in the post-season. No Chicago teams either. Instead they're stuck with a bunch of teams that no one gives a shit about like the Rays, Blue Jays, Brewers, Twins and Marlins. It's going to be a TV ratings disaster.

We should also remember what league Bettman came from. Don't think that refs don't manage outcomes in the NHL either. Bettman's been on the job 31 years and the last 30 Cups have all been won by US based teams.

I actually think mlb officials are the best (but robot umps are still needed).

I'm amazed at how often the super slo mo proves the ump right
Because MLB is the easiest sport to officiate. The play comes to you so you're almost always in perfect position to see it and there are no non-calls. It's either a ball or a strike. A baserunner is either safe or he's out. The ball is either fair or foul.

on the topic of refs, this is some great news..

needs to be transparently laid out how that error could possibly occur, and who knew when….but didn’t speak up about the obvious error that had occurred.

Also: Can someone remember the last time an NFL referee was trending on Twitter? I'm not an NBA fan, but I know who Scott Foster is. I know who he is because I see him trending way too often on Twitter, and it's not for love and praise of his work.
Now Google Angel Hernandez.

And if social media had existed 30 years ago, you could have Googled Kerry Fraser and got pages worth of feedback.

The reports on the NYG's plans last off-season didn't make much sense, either.

They wanted to franchise Daniel Jones, which is a good idea. One year, prove it or move it. No issue. They wanted to give a one year deal to Jones.

...because they wanted to give a long-term contract to their often-injured running back, Saquon Barkley. (What?) And then negotiations failed.

...So because they weren't able to get a deal done with Barkley, then franchised him and gave Daniel Jones a long-term deal instead.

What kind of fucking buffoonery is this?

But I sure am glad the Giants keep putting plasters over their wounds by just throwing money at their problems. I'm definitely glad they haven't drafted well on their offensive line beyond Andrew Thomas, nor have they drafted any wide receivers, or much in terms of DBs.

Makes me very happy.
The Eagles are the only team in the NFC East that isn't either a fraud or complete dogshit.

That's one thing I love about rugby. I'm watching the World Cup right now and in the spring I always watch the 6 Nations and not only are the refs mic'd but you can see and hear both sides of the conversation whenever there's a video review. You see and hear the ref, you see and hear the video person in the booth and you see the replays they see, all in real time. It's never left to the TV commentators to try and figure out what the thought process behind a call was. You see and hear it for yourself.

I need to give Rugby a whirl….that’s one sport I’ve never watched a lick of.
Way better than metrosexual pansy sports like soccer. It's a sport played by actual men with real body contact and some violence. When a player needs medical attention it's because he's actually hurt, not just play-acting in hopes of gaining a free kick. It ticks all the boxes.

Why anyone would prefer soccer over rugby is a mystery to me.

Angel Hernandez & Joe West are the MLB umpires that get rightfully shit on every time they do a game. Trust me, I know who they are.

Of course he does. He's bullet proof. He's got a job, a well paying job too, until he decides he wants to retire. It's the only reason MLB umpires aren't the cream of the crop: If you can't get rid of bad refs/umps, then they have way too much power.

He can get away with just being downright terrible at his job, trying to sue the league by alleging it's racial bias that he's not getting more opportunities in the playoffs and not even have to try to be better.

glad you have finally accepted the truth the NFL favours the Packers and Steelers

it does take a certain level of cultured sophistication to properly appreciate the beautiful game. 🧐

….I’m always down for some lunkhead‘s bashing into one another too tho, so maybe next 6 nations Cup, I’ll try to follow it. Gimme a reminder when it rolls around.

The 2024 tourney will kick off on Friday February 2nd, and will end on Saturday, March 16th. I have an IPTV box so I'm able to watch the feeds directly from the UK (BBC and ITV) I can even watch them in Welsh if I want. They're also carried en francais in France. But while every middling soccer tournament gets covered on Canadian sports networks, I'm not sure where in Canada you can go to find these games (DAZN, maybe?) Here's the complete list of broadcasters...

The Packers play in a city in the middle of nowhere with a population of 101,015, according to the 2021 census data. Do you really think the league or the TV networks give a shit about them? And Pittsburgh is the 26th ranked television market in the US. Dallas/Fort Worth, on the other hand, is ranked 5th in the nation and has a metropolitan population of 6.5 million people. So don't give me this crap about favoring the Packers and Steelers. Those two teams actually have to be good to get on national TV. The Cowboys are like the Leafs. All they have to do to get national TV coverage is to exist in the first place.

I have DAZN & FuboTV so maybe I get lucky on one of those.
Pretty sure DAZN will have it. Pretty much all the games are played on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm in Edmonton and if there are 2 games on a Saturday the first one will start at 7 or 7:30am Mountain Time so that's 9 or 9:30 Eastern. Rugby matches are 80 minutes long (two 40 minute halfs) and don't usually have a ton of injury time added because unlike soccer, rugby players only roll around on the pitch when they're actually hurt for real. In rugby, pretending to be injured is considered a pussy move. They're much more like old school hockey players who would rather pretend they aren't hurt and just keep playing.
