OT: Soccer thread

Balotelli cut by his Series B team, might be headed Series C or Romania. Lulz.

“European Super League” plans announced yesterday. It’s a media gong show today.
European domestic leagues are just dumb. Highly predictable and downright boring except for few matches a year. No salary cap. Soccer isn't a type of game that a home grown star or two can suddenly give you a shot.

This has been obvious for so long. EUFA ignored it. Select few clubs got more and more powerful and this happens.

I'd watch this league. Make it happen.

Yeah it's annoying.

I've wanted a super league forever, it was o obvious, but this isn't the way it should have happened.

This is like the NHLs "World Cup" of hockey. Its bad for the sport in general even though champions league needs a change

It's not really like that tho.

The top teams are so much bigger than the rest of their leagues that they really do belong in their own league.

It's like if North American sports leagues were all divided up into individual state and provincial leagues, and the Leafs were up against Sudbury and Trenton.

Oh, it’s messy:

1) Neither Bayern nor PSG have signed on.
2) Bayern wants the CL reformed.
3) PSG owned by Qatari interests, who also have TV rights for CL in some markets. Power play...
4) Publicly listed teams, like Juve and ManYoo, saw their shares increase substantially today.
5) Both Real and Barca are in serious debt and very keen on this.
6) Man City and Chelsea were said to somewhat hesitant, but felt they couldn’t be left behind.
7) Ajax and Porto are possible candidates.
8) Would they need to set up a draft in a closed system?

Yup - especially Bayern München.

And from what I gather, the whole roll out was catastrophic. The public faces of this thing were oligarchic creeps, the players and coaches had no idea what was going on...

I’m surprised JP Morgan, the financier, was that naive. There’s something definitely fishy about this.

They should have aimed for 30, I think the clubs involved got greedy with that whole "3.5 billion per founding club" bit.

They could have kneecapped Fifa & Uefa if the 12 were joined by a committed Bayern, PSG, Porto, Ajax and then the next biggest clubs from the big 4 leagues (Everton, Milan, Schalke, Dortmund, etc).

It's probably not a bad idea for the sport if done right. This wasn't that though.

Sounds like TFC are close to bringing in a 3rd designated player (spend as much as you want but your cap hit is fixed at a lower rate). From the highlights he reminds me a little of Giovinco. The player is 23 year old Yeferson Soteldo from Santos in Brazil.
