But let's talk about one issue here - defunding the police. As you know, many folks got upset at police tactics after what happened to George Floyd. Some discourse got heated, as information came out about how many white supremacists and racist scumbags work in law enforcement. People also noted that many police departments, even in small towns, were wearing military-grade tactical gear with high-powered weapons and looked like they were cosplaying Call of Duty, rather than keeping the peace. Some people suggested their budgets might be too big - do they really need all of this firepower and armor?

Now let's (hopefully) quickly agree that working in law enforcement is a dangerous and extremely stressful job. Police officers need to be protected from violent criminals. I'm sure there are some morons out there who literally want to defund all police, but most rational people were talking about reviewing their training, and their budgets, and there's nothing wrong with doing that. Every department everywhere should do that periodically, yes?

Now for Mamdani specifically, in 2020 he posted on social media: "We don't need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety. What we need is to #DefundTheNYPD" and "There is no negotiating with an institution this wicked & corrupt... Defund it. Dismantle it. End the cycle of violence".

I don't need to predict specifically what he wants to do. I am taking his words - not the subsequent backtracks - at face value. He harbors significant resentment towards Israel, and by extension Jews, and his ideas for the economy and society are disastrously bad and proven as such repeatedly throughout history. How exactly he intends to fuck up NY for Jews and non-Jews alike, I don't know. As countless critics have pointed out, he tried to personalize a story to gain sympathy for himself and for his religion, where there was no personal connection whatsoever, and he's using an event like 9/11, the posterchild for the destructive force of radical islam, which costs thousands of Americans their lives, to do it.

Also, on economic theory, I'll just add a couple of posts here from another thread. Just heard Mamdani say yesterday that he's a "democratic socialist". Please at least put a tiny amount of effort into understanding what that means. Unless you think Canada is some sort of godless socialist dystopian hellhole that the citizens are desperate to escape from. You know, like Theoren Fleury.

I mean, I dig the energy but I'd really like if people like this spent a bit more time explaining what "socialism" is (as in, a market economy indistinguishable from the one we live in now, but with moderately robust goverment regulation to keep a thriving middle class live) rather than threatening other people with a word they seem to understand as meaning bread line communism.
