And tastes change over time. Up until like 5 years ago, I never thought I'd spend more than $100 on watch.
Audi was still bringing them over until a few years ago. Had to hunt though to get mine with a manual (traveled out to Oshawa to get it). I'm gonna ride the thing until they bring the full model line electric.I gave up trying to look. Had a 330i (07, I think) that was stick, the last manual I owned.
Not a diehard of manual but after about a week it's not a pain really. Muscle memory is a hell of a thing. Like riding a bike.My best friend drove stick in high school and I literally just couldn't understand wanting to deal with the pain in the ass of shifting.
Being a passenger in a manual car is the worst.
Not saying I disagree. Typically I'm the guy who buys the higher quality version of things. The main difference for pure functionality? A well built stainless steel cased, sapphire domed dive watch will be able to take an epic shit kicking for decades. You'll be on your 10th timex while your swiss or japanese dive watch will be more or less as good as new minus some marking on the band and case.
For the rest of it? Comes down to whether or not you're fascinated with watchmaking craftsmanship. If you're not, stick with quartz (not a damn thing wrong with a well built quartz watch). If you are, there's something fun about seeing a well finished movement behind a display caseback.
It's little different than most other arguments though. What does any consumer good of higher quality provide that it's cheaper counterpart doesn't? Usually higher initial quality (asthetic and otherwise), durability, longevity, etc. It's entirely possible to buy a good quartz dive/sport watch for well under $1000 that you would have for decades and if cared for, would outlast you.
I anticipate having a battle with the wife when our current (manual) car needs to be replaced. I expect to win this round though. I will be in trouble when hybrids/electric cars are more competitively priced however...I gave up trying to look. Had a 330i (07, I think) that was stick, the last manual I owned.
I mean I take your point but what I wear on my wrist is definitely about meThere's your first mistake. It's not about you. If you're not into timepieces those that are generally don't care. It's an admiration for a finely tuned piece coupled with aesthetics. You either love watches or you don't. Both equally fine. Enjoy your watch.
yeah now that I've owned my manual for nearly five years, I cannot imagine ever going back to automatic. I've driven my parent's automatics briefly and my god is it truly unenjoyable. No pain. Keeps you better engaged in driving. Main reason is safety. More enjoyable, better control.
only if the driver is incompetentBeing a passenger in a manual car is the worst.

Significantly more control, significantly more enjoyment, way better engagement, I would argue much safer, more fuel efficient, and just more fucking fun. Driving manual is fun. Driving automatic is boring.
