OT: The News Thread

My best friends wife is Japanese and I think she grew up using a Moka pot, because that’s primarily how she makes her coffee….and anytime I’m there I have her make me one. It’s strong af and the closest I’ve had to a proper espresso shot….but with a bit of milk & sugar it’s brilliant.
As a kid growing my grandmother would serve us a shot of Moka pot coffee with a bowl of sweet whipped cream. You take a spoon of the whipped cream, dip it in the coffee then eat it. Repeat until it was gone. Best dessert ever.

I love moka pots and have collected several nice ones over the years. When my fancy machine eventually breaks down, I will use them again

Ever since I asked about mosquitos my backyard has been infested with them….talking 15-20+ of them swarming me within 15 seconds of being in the backyard. Poor pup can barely finish a piss before he’s swarmed too.

zeke’s theracell thing seems to work pretty solid on the deck tho. Still see the odd one, but i can at least sit out there for a bit and enjoy the sun.

gonna grab a couple more and maybe one of their portable ones, give that a whirl.
Theracell? Doesn't anyone use a good ol' fashioned bug zapper anymore?

Depending the size of your backyard and what it's like, and whether you can hide some buckets (or if you just don't care about having buckets of water sitting around your yard), you could try "mosquito death buckets".

You just fill up some 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot or whatever with 1/2 to 3/4 water, toss some grass clippings/dirt in there to make it feel all at home for the mosquitos, and toss a piece of these in: Mosquito Dunks

They treat almost 10 square meters for surface water for 30 days...so for a bucket you just need a small piece, and add again after 30 days. It's a bacteria that's kills the mosquito larvae, so you're playing the long-game. Getting the mosquitos to lay their eggs where they'll never develop and reducing the local population more and more with each cycle.

My property is semi-rural and surrounded by bush on two sides. I have a few of these out and I've noticed a pretty big difference this year despite a pretty wet spring/summer.

Bug zappers attract more bugs than they kill. Total scam. Satisfying sound tho.

They also mostly kill bugs that don’t bite you anyways.

Though I do have a bug zapper shaped like a tennis racket that is fantastic. Either for vaporizing any mosquitos buzzing around you in the yard or any killing any flies that find their way into your home.

I guess I know todays project.

similarly I have areas on two sides where I could easily hide such buckets in some brush, will give it a shot.

Bugs show up around you whether you want them there or not so you might as well attract them to the nearby zapper.

And yes it is a very satisfying sound. Some of the larger bugs really pop and sizzle.

Rome braced for record 43C heat
Temperatures continued to reach extreme highs across many parts of the northern hemisphere on Monday, with the mercury in parts of Italy poised to hit 45C on Tuesday and wildfires raging in Greece and Spain signalling the latest fierce warning of the effects of the climate crisis.

In Italy, where temperatures later in the week could push close to the European record of 48.8C, set in the Sicilian town of Floridia in August 2021, Italians were warned to brace themselves for “the most intense heatwave of the summer and also one of the most intense of all time”.

The health ministry has sounded a red alert for 16 cities including Rome, Bologna and Florence.

Temperatures are expected to hit as high as 43C in Rome on Tuesday, smashing the record of 40.5C set in August 2007.
