OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

a conflict studies and human rights major at the U of O
If anyone was wondering if Coulter's "bush league" comment had any validity, this degree proves it.

"Conflict studies and human rights"? Sounds like a perfect degree to be a pencil pushing blow-hard in one of the many large government departments.

Meh. With all the bitching about the right to free speech, I guess Coulter and her supporters didn't stop to consider that's exactly what those protesters were exercising: their right to free speech, and their right to protest. Not that I support the course of action those protesters took though. If I'd been a student at that University, I'd have given her appearance the attention it deserved: none. As someone who thrives on negative publicity, they're just giving her exactly what she wants. She'd have been far more hurt if nobody showed up except for a smattering of fans with books to sign.
Absolutely. But when protest drifts into safety concerns - having 100's of people jammed into a hallway is massively dangerous - then you are infringing on others rights.

They should have protested outside, and made all the stink they wanted, but Coulter and her supporters had the right to gather and discuss eliminated by the intolerant and hypocritical left.

Re: OT - The News Thread

She's a pundit/entertainer. She is always on "speaking tours".

Why anyone would want to pay to hear her is beyond me, but that doesn't mean you can stop others from doing so.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I disagree with Coulter and everything she is, but I also think that inviting her up here to speak and then taking it back is stupid.

I have heard contrary reports though that 1. The person who contacted her about brushing up on Canada's hate law was not the Vice president of the University but rather the Vice president of the Student Union HUGE DIFFERENCE. University student unions are disgustingly politcally correct entities that do nothing of benefit.

2. That at London U, she was asked about that Camel and Flying carpet comment and she talked about saying it in the past to someone. She didn't say it to someone at the talk. It's on youtube of course.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Hey I know there are a few Fort McMurray people here.... what is up with all of the Somilians from Toronto getting killed up in cow town. I mean 29 in the past few years??

ARe they stepping on the Biker's drug turf or the chinese??

They are the little fish in the big pond methinks, and they are getting crushed. What's the reasoning for all this violence (legit question here)

It was the provost of the University. NOT a member of the student union/council. You're right, it is a huge difference...and a huge embarrassment for the University.

When she made the "camel" comment, it was in response to a student trying to call her out for her magic carpet comment a few years ago. Kudos to the student for trying to challenge Coulter, but what did you expect? for her to backdown?

Gang violence.

Re: OT - The News Thread

but they are emphatically the most intolerant and militant group of people on the planet

emphatically.. they are not.

not even the most 'intolerant' or 'militant' university campus in ontario.. let alone group of people on the PLANET.

in any event, as a human being i hate the fact that a subpar pundit/screaming idiot like ann coulter is allowed to talk at a university campus. still, we have a right to freedom of thought and expression, and she is within her right to exercise that. she should not be silenced, regardless of how much vile bullshit she spews.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Does anyone know if she was being paid an appearance fee by the school with the money coming from tuition fees? Cause if she was, I think I have the right to say 'no thanks'.

If she was only collecting money from ticket revenues then I really don't have a problem with her spewing her garbage.

Pretty sure I heard that the University paid her $10,000 to make an appearance.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Did the student body have the right to say 'no thanks' to Anti-Isreal Aparthied Week?

That was partly funded by the University.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Yes they do, cork, but they didn't. It's up to the students how they want to spend their money, IMO.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't think the right to free speech means I have to pay money out of my pocket to let every person speak, no matter how much I disagree with their views. If I don't like what someone has to say I'm not going to pay them to come and say it just because they have the right to do it.

Re: OT - The News Thread

In George Galloway's case I could understand the reasoning behind preventing him from entering the country to speak as he had actually provided financial contributions to documented terrorist groups like Hamas, but in this case it seems to just smack of a dislike of the person's political position. I don't feel that Coulter represents conservatives particularly well for obvious reasons, but I also strongly oppose the extremist left-wing elements of the student body and university administration preventing a legitimate expression of free speech from taking place on campus. There exists no right not to be offended by another person's ideological perspectives.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Good points, but at the end of the day I should have the right to decide how my money is spent, and it ain't gonna be on someone like Coulter.

If Mats Sundin offers to give a talk on how to properly cook swedish meatballs I would naturally be thrilled, but I wouldn't cry about free speech if the majority of the student body didn't feel it was a good use of their money.

If she wants to come and talk for free, have a ball.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I disagree. You shouldn't have the right to decide how your money is spent.

It is like saying I dont want my taxes going to healthcare.

I paid for a lot of extra crap I never wanted at Uni...like a gym membership.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Oh and Im not saying you cant complain...I just dont think it is a 'right'

Re: OT - The News Thread

If the majority of people in Canada didn't want their tax money going to healthcare, it wouldn't. I'm no expert on this stuff, but I think this is how democracy works.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Coulter is a hate-mongering freak who deserves hatred in return.
