OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

no i wasnt arguing that the war in iraq was the reason there werent any terrorist attacks. i was arguing that it was a contributing factor. going to iraq and afghanistan and dying for allah kept many of those maniacs away from our shores, which had to help. the other security measures put in place helped too.

and saying that 9/11 was an attack on the west doesnt affect that argument one way or another.

Re: OT - The News Thread

The war in Afghanistan and Iraq is what has energized the radical islamic groups. "want proof that the US is out to get you? They're occupying TWO formerly good Islamic republics!"

There are FAR more people attacking the US because they want them out of the middle east than there are people attacking the US because they don't like MTV and Wall Street.

Antisa Khvichava: 130-Year-Old Woman Found By Georgian TV

A Georgian TV station has revealed footage of what they say is a 130-year-old woman.

Antisa Khvichava was born in 1880, according to documents the TV station has apparently found. This puts her at 20 years older than the current oldest living person, and 10 years older than the oldest living person ever recorded.

While her age may not be officially confirmed yet, one thing's for sure - despite her years, Khvichava seems to have retained a talent for drinking.

i find it hard to believe that a 130 year old would have ~10 year old great grand children. maybe i'm wrong. but that seems off.

Re: OT - The News Thread

i submit to you that the spanish election turnaround right after the spanish attack fueled more terrorism than the war in iraq did. polls showed the spanish gov't well ahead in the polls just days before the election, then there was the bombing, and there was a dramatic shift and the socialists won, and it is widely acknowledged that the bombing was the reason. invertebrate spain allowed itself to be intimidated by a terrorist act, and it demonstrated to jihadi scumbags everywhere that their tactics could WORK.

Tolerant Mississippi cancels a prom instead of allowing a lesbian to attend....LOL.

Brave kid, imagine the backlash the school board's action will have on her.

Prom axed after lesbian's date request

JACKSON, Miss. - A school decided Wednesday not to host a prom dance after a lesbian student demanded she be able to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

The Mississippi school district's policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student, to the dance on April 2.

Instead, the school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."

The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by The Associated Press if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.

"It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors," district officials said in the statement. "However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students."

The ACLU said a school policy banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights.

Kristy Bennett, legal director for the ACLU of Mississippi, said the district was trying to avoid the issue.

"But that doesn't take away their legal obligations to treat all the students fairly," Bennett said. "On Constance's behalf, this is unfair to her. All she's trying to do is assert her rights."

Bennett said she wouldn't allow McMillen to comment on Wednesday, saying "she's still trying to process" the district's actions. Calls to McMillen's cellphone went unanswered.

Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. It borders Pontotoc County, Mississippi, where more than a decade ago school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.

Anna Watson, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, was looking forward to the prom, especially since the town's only hotspot is the bowling alley, she said.

"I am a little bummed out about it. I guess it's a decision that had to be made. Either way someone was going to get disappointed - either Constance was or we were," Watson said. "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does."

Other students are on McMillen's side.

McKenzie Chaney, 16, said she wasn't planning to attend the prom, but "it's kind of ridiculous that they can't let her wear the tuxedo and it all be over with."

A Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.

The ACLU said McMillen approached school officials shortly before the memo went out because she knew same-sex dates had been banned in the past. The ACLU said district officials told McMillen she and her girlfriend wouldn't be allowed to arrive together, that she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo, and that she and her girlfriend might be asked to leave if their presence made any other students "uncomfortable."

McMillen said she feared she would be thrown out of the prom because "we do live in the Bible Belt."

Re: OT - The News Thread

I am loving the weather also, although I did spend most of this winter in southeast asia and Mexico it is still so awesome to see the mood in the city when the weather warms up a bit.

It isn't warm though still only 8 as a high but I saw 3 people wearing shorts and so many people without jackets on. There is no way it is warm for them, I just laugh at the think skin some people have.

Can't wait, patio drinking season is just around the corner!!

Re: OT - The News Thread

Following Toronto's wettest summer ever. I'm not sure what that's supposed to prove.
Wet and cold. Honestly, that was the most pathetic excuse for a summer I think in my lifetime so far. We earned this mild winter with that shitty summer.

A group of kite surfers from Toronto is “lucky to be alive” after breaking through ice on Lake Simcoe Friday afternoon.

At about 5 p.m., York Regional Police received calls from several witnesses who saw the four men, who had been kite surfing on the frozen surface of Cook’s Bay near Keswick, fall into the freezing cold water.

A group of five York Regional Police officers immediately donned ice rescue gear and walked out to the men, jumping in and holding their heads above water until they were able to roll up onto the ice.

The Georgina Fire Department arrived a short time later with an air boat to take the men to safety.

The four men, who were in the water for about 30 minutes, were all taken to hospital and are being treated for hypothermia. A fifth man who had been with the group but did not fall into the water, is also being treated for hypothermia.

Police say the men were all conscious at the time of rescue.

Acting Staff Sgt. Kevin Smith with York Region police said that none of the five men were wearing life jackets or cold suits.

“Apparently their friends and family and people had told them not to go out,” Smith said. “The water’s still really cold. They’re lucky to be alive.”

Smith said that one of the five York Region officers had his rescue suit fill up with water during the rescue but was still able to continue, despite the cold and the added weight.

All five York Region officers will be recommended for recognitions of bravery, he said

Seriously? SERIOUSLY!? It was 18 today, wtf are you doing on a frozen lake for? God, these guys didn't deserve to be rescued, that's natural selection at work.
