OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

If the majority of people in Canada didn't want their tax money going to healthcare, it wouldn't. I'm no expert on this stuff, but I think this is how democracy works.

Nah...that is how direct democracy works. :p Which Canada isn't.

Sure we have elections that could change that but once elected we have no 'right' to stop paying for whatever the goverment decides.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I know what Canada is, and if they majority of people decided they didn't want gov't run healthcare it wouldn't take long for that to happen.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I disagree with Coulter and everything she is, but I also think that inviting her up here to speak and then taking it back is stupid.

I have heard contrary reports though that 1. The person who contacted her about brushing up on Canada's hate law was not the Vice president of the University but rather the Vice president of the Student Union HUGE DIFFERENCE. University student unions are disgustingly politcally correct entities that do nothing of benefit.

no it wasnt. it was the VP of the UNIVERSITY.

Re: OT - The News Thread

the VP of the University was doing her a favor to ensure she didn't get herself into trouble with the police up here?

what is the problem?

Re: OT - The News Thread

Here is one thing I forgot for a second, though: The majority of my tuition is paid for with tax money. So I'm not sure how that changes what I said.

Anyway, **** Ann Coulter in her stupid horse face.

All I was saying was (and Im not sure how majority got brought up) that you do not have a choice but to pay your entire tuition (or taxes) and take what they give you. You cannot opt out (for most things anyway).

For example, I had to pay $1 a semester for the Women's Centre...I had no choice and it was not my right that my $1 go to something else or that I get to keep that $1.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't think the right to free speech means I have to pay money out of my pocket to let every person speak, no matter how much I disagree with their views. If I don't like what someone has to say I'm not going to pay them to come and say it just because they have the right to do it.
You have the right to make your opinion known and to protest, but you don't get to pull fire alarms and raise security concerns in hopes of stopping the event.

I had part of my tuition pay for Naiomi Klein to come and spew her anti-corporate hate, would it have been okay for me to pull the fire alarm at the library?

Re: OT - The News Thread

I also had to pay for a student pro-choice group - now I'm not against abortion - but I'd rather not pay for them to run their little club.

Would it have been fair for me to shout them down in the hallways and block the hallways outside of their office?

Re: OT - The News Thread

I'm just saying if the majority of people who put money into the institution (which includes all taxpayers) decide that they don't want to spend the money to keep up the Women's Centre, then it should be scrapped.

And I bet you that the majority of Canadians don't want their money going into the pockets of this piece of poop. If there's a small group of people out there who want to hear her speak, let them foot the bill in the form of ticket sales.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I'd support the students for protesting a planned speech by the Grand Dragon of the KKK as well.

No, of course it's not okay to pull the fire alarm. Whoever did that was an idiot, but there's always going to be a few idiots.

Shout them down sure.

Block the hallways...probably not...what if there was a fire?

But that's what caused the cancellation of the speech...

Not people protesting outside, it was people pulling fire alarms and blocking the hallways. That isn't a group of people exercising their right to protest, that is a vocal minority causing a dangerous environment to shutdown a speech.

Just think of how wrong that is.

I think it would be nothing more than a dick move, but I think you have the right to do that, sure.

And it was a dick move that the U of O students pulled on her. But I don't really care because it's Ann Coulter and she doesn't deserve any better, IMO.

Pulling fire alarms? Shitty. Yelling at her to GTFO until she does? I'm ok with that.

Re: OT - The News Thread

She's nothing more than a troll and this is her getting her comeuppance. If she wants to be treated with civility maybe she should be a bit more civil.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Oh look, another romper room thread. :smilielol5:

Here is a question for the little haters.

Where are these words written?

FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS.
2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(a) freedom of conscience and religion;
(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
(d) freedom of association.

It isn't wrong for those who hate enough that you think it's right. Just look at the comments in this thread.
