OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

It does encourage to love and respect those who obey what they preach. Does that count?

Re: OT - The News Thread

Who said we were atheists?

Because we don't follow an organzied cult.. I mean religion?

Re: OT - The News Thread

It's a fair assumption that people with a serious disdain for organized religion likely don't believe in the key tenant of those religions...ie, the existence of a deity.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Religion is all about social control. It's all a farce, and there is no benevolent deity waiting for us once we finally shuffle lose of this mortal coil. We just return to the state in which we existed prior to being born. Nothingness.

The only thing that worries is is the ****ed up shit that probably goes on in your brain as it goes hypoxic and dies.

Okay...and that makes them "bitter" and "intolerant" how, exactly?

A deity doesn't have to be what those religions claim it to be.

There is a great world outside of it

Re: OT - The News Thread

call them atheists, call them "secular humanists"- it doesnt matter. corky's point is pretty bang on. there are few groups as intolerant on the planet. because religion ISN'T about "social control"- first it was about trying to come up with explanations for the many things prehistoric peoples couldnt explain, and then it was about humanity's historical search for purpose and meaning in our lives so we wouldn't see ourselves as mere instintive animals on this planet eating and fornicating and then dying.

you remove what religion gives to people and you turn into what the "secular humanists" have become- intensely selfish, narcissistic, arrogant individuals who feel that everything is about them. and that breeds the most intolerant individuals you can get. because when it becomes all about YOU and nothing else, you lose the empathy and respect for others that allows us to live as civilized human beings and not just eating, fornicating animals.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Jesus hated organized religion.

I'm with Jesus.

You can stay with your diddling pope if you like.

Re: OT - The News Thread

When the human race does not need a reward/punishment system in order to treat each other with respect, maybe then we'll be able to think about this species long term.

Religion may very well have been an evolutional necessity, but it's time to let it go. Just the idea that you need some kind of guiding force to help you be a better human being is kind of sad.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I wish so called Christian religions followed the teachings of Jesus.

See, that's ignorance.

The vast majority of Christians do practice the teachings of Jesus and the bible.

The only time Christianity makes the news is when someone falters.

no they don't.

look at yourself.

Jesus told you to sell everything you own, give the money to the poor, and follow him.

and what do you do? you preach about the importance of making money.

You're so transparent.

Of course literal teachings of the bible are rarely followed. But modern translations often are.

Why do you think I tithe?
