OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

GREAT speech from netanyahu:

"NETANYAHU (via translator): I forward my questions to the international community and I asked all the leaders throughout the world who I spoke to, "What would you have done if you were in our place? And what would you have done in order to protect your civilians who are attacked by hundreds of rockets and missiles?" We all know the facts. We all know the reality. And therefore we will continue to protect our civilians. We will continue to allow our soldiers to protect their lives. And the State of Israel will continue to practice its fight for self defense.

This wasn't a Love Boat. This was a Hate Boat. These weren't pacifists; they weren't peace activists. These were violent supporters of terrorism. I think that the evidence that the lives of the Israeli seamen were in danger is crystal clear. If you're a fair-minded observer and you look at those videos, you know this simple truth. But I regret to say that for many in the international community, no evidence is needed. Israel is guilty until proven guilty."

Re: OT - The News Thread

And what would you have done in order to protect your civilians who are attacked by hundreds of rockets and missiles?

11 Israeli's killed by rocket attacks during the period of 2001-2006

9 civilians killed in 20 minutes by IDF commando's.

These weren't pacifists; they weren't peace activists. These were violent supporters of terrorism.

Cute spin

If you want to claim that the 400 Turks, people hailing from one of, if not the most democratic, secular Islamic nations on the planet, who until this incident considered Israel a friend and ally, were the ones who made it a ship of hate, run with it.

Is the MV Rachel Corrie also a ship of hate?

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ju3AAe6-3hF9Nlvh3Df8Ux_CPJzAD9G4F1M00

An aid ship trying to break the blockade of Gaza could reach Israel's 20-mile (32-kilometer) exclusion zone late Friday, an activist said, but Israel's prime minister has vowed the ship will not reach land.

The dueling comments suggest a potential new clash over Israel's three-year-old blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip — and come only four days after an Israeli commando raid on a larger aid flotilla left nine activists dead.

By Friday afternoon, the ship was 150 miles (240 kilometers) from the coast of Gaza in international waters, the group said on its website. Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead McGuire and the former head of the U.N. Oil-for-Food program in Iraq, Denis Halliday, were among the 11 passengers on board.

What's their excuse going to be for this one?

Re: OT - The News Thread

Israel is guilty until proven guilty.

and this is complete ****ing nonsense.

No, Israel is guilty when it breaks maritime law in assaulting a ship flying the flag of an ally and then flat out deny that any sort of inquiry is necessary, claiming that Israel is capable of an unbiased inquiry.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Israel denies the Palestinians concrete, because it has military applications.

They deny any supply that they believe has military applications.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Not a surprising allegation, but one that is definitely interesting to see in the media....

Reports accuse WHO of exaggerating H1N1 threat, possible ties to drug makers Network News

European criticism of the World Health Organization's handling of the H1N1 pandemic intensified Friday with the release of two reports that accused the agency of exaggerating the threat posed by the virus and failing to disclose possible influence by the pharmaceutical industry on its recommendations for how countries should respond. The WHO's response caused widespread, unnecessary fear and prompted countries around the world to waste millions of dollars, according to one report. At the same time, the Geneva-based arm of the United Nations relied on advice from experts with ties to drug makers in developing the guidelines it used to encourage countries to stockpile millions of doses of antiviral medications, according to the second report.

The reports outlined the drumbeat of criticism that has arisen, primarily in Europe, of how the world's leading health organization responded to the first influenza pandemic in more than four decades. "For WHO, its credibility has been badly damaged," wrote Fiona Godlee, the editor of the BMJ, a prominent British medical journal, that published one of the reports. "WHO must act now to restore its credibility." A spokesman for the WHO, along with several independent experts, however, strongly disputed the reports, saying they misrepresented the seriousness of the pandemic and the WHO's response, which was carefully formulated and necessary given the potential threat. "The idea that we declared a pandemic when there wasn't a pandemic is both historically inaccurate and downright irresponsible," said WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl in a telephone interview. "There is no doubt that this was a pandemic. To insinuate that this was not a pandemic is very disrespectful to the people who died from it."

The first report, released in Paris, came from the Social, Health and Family Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which launched an investigation in response to allegations that the WHO's response to the pandemic was influenced by drug companies who make antiviral drugs and vaccines. ad_icon "The parliamentary assembly is alarmed about the way in which the H1N1 influenza pandemic has been handled, not only by the World Health Organization (WHO), but also by the competent health authorities at the level of the European Union and at national level," the 18-page draft report states. "It is particularly troubled by some of the consequences of decisions taken and advice given leading to distortion of priorities of public health services across Europe, waste of large sums of public money, and also unjustified scares and fears about health risks faced by the European public at large," according to the report.

The second report, a joint investigation by the BMJ and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which is based in London, criticized 2004 guidelines the WHO developed based in part on the advice of three experts who received consulting fees from the two leading manufacturers of antiviral drugs used against the virus, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline. "We are left wondering whether major public health organizations are able to effectively manage the conflicts of interest that are inherent in medical science," the report states. Hartl dismissed those charges. "WHO would say categorically that it believes that it has not been subject to undue conflict-of-interest. We know that some experts that come to our committees have contact with industry. It would be surprising if they didn't because the best experts are sought by all organizations," Hartl said. "We feel that the guidelines produced were certainly not subject to undue influence." Several other experts also defended the agency. "Twenty-twenty hindsight can always second guess the decisions of public health officials," said Jeffrey Levi, executive director of the Trust for America's Health, a private nonprofit group. "But this kind of condemnation of public health officials who made the most prudent decisions based on available knowledge could well backfire in future emergencies: I fear that public health officials will draw the lesson that they should wait for greater scientific certainty before responding in the future -- and we could pay for that overcaution with many lives lost." In response to the criticism, the WHO has launched two investigations, including one by an independent panel of experts led by Harvey Fineberg, who heads the Institute of Medicine at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

"These reports raise questions about potential, inappropriate influences on WHO decision-making in the assessment and response to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and, more generally, question practices employed by WHO to guard against conflict of interest among its expert advisers," Fineberg said in an e-mail. "These topics are among those that will be fully considered by our review committee."

Re: OT - The News Thread

krauthammer's main point was PROVEN by the text that was provided- did you read the part where it said "basic food supplies are plentiful" because of the efforts of the aid organizations?? no one is starving in gaza.

and to the point "poverty has tripled since 2007"- can someone please remind us all what happened in gaza in 2007 that might have LED to this tripling of poverty?

hint: it involves a certain terrorist group coming to power. it also might have something to do with the fact that the stupid f*cking arabs completely trashed and looted the only valuable industry that the israelis left behind for them when they evacuated- the many greenhouses that were growing high-end specialty crops that were making lots of money. the second the israelis left jihadi scumbags came in and completely trashed all the greenhouses and looted all the infrastructure in them.

.

Read some stats on starvation in gaza to see how ridiculous that claim is. Your fear of hamas really clouds your ability to think.

Bold statement to say that no one is starving in gaza....when I found many many stories with a simple google search.

Re: OT - The News Thread

i've done a ton of research on the middle east. nothing in it demonstrates to me that there is a grave humanitarian crisis in gaza caused by the israelis. if you are suggesting otherwise, show me your research.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Well, there is no denying the hardships that Israeli has caused Gazans with the blockade (and well before it, too). Through the prevention of rebuilding and rationing of supplies, goods, etc. they have made it impossible for Gazans to have any semblance of a functioning state.

At the same time, it is unfair to the Israelis to ignore the legitimate security issues that require at least some control (barring a lasting and legitimate peace deal and to some extent, even with one) over Gazan border points and air space.

Hamas is a threat -- maybe not an existential threat, but a threat nonetheless. But things change when you enter Syria, Hezbollah and possibly Iran into the equation. Free entry into and over Gaza does pose significant threats to Israel, and yes, the threats posed by those entities are existential. That is why the cry from these activists and others for a return to 1967 borders is complete nonsense. Israel has been granted its right to exist. It is an internationally recognized nation state (much to the chagrin of many of its neighbours). And it has a right to security. Let's face it, there is a reason why Israel hasn't faced as significant a threat since 1967...

With that said, subordinating and essentially destroying the livelihood of Gazans is unsustainable.

Re: OT - The News Thread

why bother? your not going to believe it anyways.....pointless...

In the interests of others, here is a link to one instance of starvation....there are also lots of publications showing the high degree of malnourishment in Gaza...Israel denies any humanitarian crisis, but why would they acknowledge it?

http://www.newser.com/story/47341/red-cross-slams-idf-after-grisly-gaza-find.html

Notice how the red cross claims that the Israeli's actively resisted them entering the location.

Also here.....http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/chronic-malnutrition-in-gaza-blamed-on-israel-1019521.html

Look I'm not saying Israel doesn't have a right to defend themselves, but they can't lie to the world and expect (well outside of KB and a handful of others) everyone to just accept them on words alone.

Re: OT - The News Thread

that first story you have there is meaningless.

the second one also doesn't show "starvation" being caused by israel. i think mark regev sums it up pretty well when he says:

"Mark Regev, the spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said that, contrary to hopes when Israel pulled out of Gaza, the Gazan people were being "held hostage" to Hamas's "extremist and nihilist" ideology which was causing undoubted suffering. If Hamas focused resources on the "diet of the people" instead of on "Qassam rockets and violent jihadism" then "this sort of problem would not exist", he said. "

Re: OT - The News Thread

you see that's the difference, I don't give a rats ass about Hamas and it's power....all I care about are suffering people who also likely don't give a rats ass about Hamas and it's power.

And you saying my story is meaningless and then posting the Israeli PM's spokesman's comments as some kind of undeniable truth is really interesting.
