OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

Better yet, go take a walk in downtown Toronto...go assert your civil liberties!

There is a sympathetic group of young people dressed in all black and clown garb that I'm sure are interested in your ramblings.

Or why not go express your democratic right to march right into the G20 facility and shake Obama's hand.

You can do it!

Re: OT - The News Thread

good to hear. if they are foreign nationals, they need to be forcefully escorted out, NEVER allowed back in the country again and told if they do come back, they will be living in a cell provided by the taxpayers of canada.

if they are homegrown, they need to be kept in a cell for weeks or months until a case can be made against them, they are put on trial, and made to pay for their crimes. they need to be questioned to determine if there are higher forces organizing them to do this, so those forces can be sought out and eliminated.

go ahead and call that whatever you want to call it. if you are an anarchist piece of garbage then you will be treated like one.

Again, willfully missing the point. I'm not downtown, because I have no problem with the G20, and no desire to light police cars on fire or fight with police officers, a bunch of whom I count as close personal or family friends.

However, if I was walking down the street within 5 meters of the security fence yesterday, there's no legal reason why I should have had to submit myself to a search and present ID, or get arrested. And if the government wanted to change that law, they should have at least done it openly and informed me and the rest of the public so I wouldn't get thrown in jail for asserting what are widely known as my rights.

I'm not sure why I'm bothering though. You just willfully keep on ignoring that point, and just try and portray me as sympathetic to the protestors, instead of actually coming up with some kind of argument against anything I'm saying. It really seems to be your only tool in debates on politics or current events. On a couple of occasions on this board where I've criticized something Harper/the Conservative party has done, your tactic as been to dismiss me as a left-wing loon until I point out that I voted Conservative in the last election, and as of this moment still plan to in the next election. You add nothing worthwhile to this thread.

Re: OT - The News Thread

And seriously, why are all of the female socialists/anarchists always hideously ugly? If those people had some good tail in that crowd I would be a lot more sympathetic to their cause. Instead we get a bunch of butch-looking carpet-munchers. Seriously disappointing. The bitchy conservative women in their uggs and lulus are a thousand times hotter even if they reinforce the "establishment."

Re: OT - The News Thread

I believe that question answers itself.

Like how 99% of punk and goth kids are too fat, too skinny or just plain socially and / or physically awkward.

Re: OT - The News Thread

It has been fun day but anyone left in the streets is not a peaceful demonstrator, time to lock the city down.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Can someone explain what the protest is about?
It's the same idiots that go around burning stuff and causing problems at every gathering of the G7/G8/G20. And then there's a huge crowd of curious onlookers for those people to shrink back into. And then I guess there are other protest groups, like there was a gay protest group, pro-choice, the "Ontario coalition against poverty" and a bunch of other random groups. Though the coalition against poverty dude was on CP24 actively condoning the violence, and encouraging more. But for the most part, the people smashing and burning stuff are just doing it because they think it's fun, I believe.

The government published the change to the the Public Works Protection Act on the elaws website (where every other law gets published). The government did what they were supposed to do, you can't blame them becuase no one from your movement took the time to actually pay attention to what was going on at Queen's Park.
The fricking law was published on the website site 5 days before it came into force.

I'm sorry, but the government doesn't have to hold your hand every time a law is changed. Take some responsibility that you guys were too lazy/ignorant/arrogant/stoned to even look into the possibility that a law could be altered. And don't act like you don't have lawyers on your side, you have the entire Canadian Civil Liberties Association which is chalked full of lawyers.

Excuse me? "Your movement"? "You guys"? How is it that both you and corksens are so ****ing intellectually lazy that you assume that because I believe in civil liberties and open and transparent government, that I either AM one of these ******* protestors, or I sympathize with their cause? I'm not exactly quoting radical, subversive, far left-wing ideology---this is what every "Western democracy" is built on. And read my posts before you climb up on your high horse and make your holier-than-thou dumb-ass asumptions.

And no, posting such a drastic revision of Canadian citizens' fundamental rights and freedoms on an e-laws website, after passing the law in the first place in a closed secret meeting of the cabinet is not sufficient notification of the public. Corksens hasn't been willing to give me a good reason, so I'll ask you---why not either issue a press release, or have a news conference informing protestors exactly what their "new" rights are? Besides of course, the knowledge that making such a draconian measure public before the summit would have resulted in it being challenged and defeated?

Re: OT - The News Thread

they got you doing exactly what they wanted you to do ! pick and argue with each other condone many for a few ! and not even question the actions of the participants of g20 and their decisions that eventually affect you

but hey as long as your outraged over a prop/ decoy oh i mean a police cruiser thats ok ! because lets fear and be angered over those black masked anarchists and not those whose really matter

sorry go you can go back to sleep now

I add nothing to this thread?

You are bringing up a non-issue and making it massive. You should apply at the CBC.

This is a temporary measure created to allow police greater ability to either out a potential threat, or keep them at a greater distance from the security zone.

You are the one making something so obviously simple into a civil liberties issue.

Now who is the one being lazy. I never pinned you as being a part of any movement or political party. I just called you a baby.

You are splitting hairs. They did not do anything illegal in passing this legislation. It was vetted appropriately, voted on, and passed through without any loopholes. The government then presented it to the public as required.

You're use of words like "drastic revision", "draconian measure", ect. shows that you've made this more than it is.

What is so wrong with being asked to provide ID for a temporary period of time if you come too close to a security perimeter?

Seriously, how does that affect your life whatsoever?

Insert tin foil hat picture here.

Down with the Man, man!

Re: OT - The News Thread

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Any guesses on what lunatic, anarchist, left-wing "baby" said the above?

Re: OT - The News Thread

Benjamin Franklin. Google for the win.

Any that's a nice quote and all, but it doesn't make it right, in his time or in ours.

Really? Sure sounds like you did, just a couple of posts up on this page.

If you'd asked anybody on Friday, including legal experts: "what's wrong with refusing to present ID or submit to a search from a police officer who can provide no probable cause to conduct that search"? The answer would've been "nothing". But unbeknownst to anyone that doesn't peruse the provincial government's "e-laws" website daily for their own amusement, that would have been the wrong answer, and would have resulted in them getting arrested. I have a major problem with that. You apparantly don't.
