OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

On one hand I love the wackiness of the NBA trade deadline, on the other I kinda like associating stars with a particular team and them basically staying there most of their career. I guess that still kinda happens.

This is interesting, I don't know what Atlanta is thinking... but rebuild time?

Trae is regressing hard over the last few years though. He's never been able to defend even a bit, but he's gone from being a legitimately elite offensive engine, to being a high volume meh efficiency scorer, and a high volume playmaker with a turnover problem.

They should 100% trade him before his next deal is stratospheric, and while he still has as much value as he's going to have. I could definitely see a bunch of front offices make big mistakes on him. Brooklyn, Phoenix, Philly, Washington, Chicago.

So kind of quickly wrapping my head around what this means for the roster this summer:

Jake: 19.5
Scottie: 38.775
Ingram: UFA (I'm going to put 32 in for now)
RJ: 27.7
IQ: 32.5

Dick: 4.99
Okai: 6.4
Walter: 3.64
Mogbo: 1.96
Shead: 1.96

Davion: RFA with a 19.4 million dollar cap hold for some reason

So that gets us to 169 million in committed money...and our high 1st this year (should be around 8.5 if we pick 5th overall, up to 12.5 if we pick 1st though) brings us to ~178 but 197 ish with Davion's cap hold. The 1st apron will be around 196, so we've got the MLE (12.9M) to work with and could easily bring Boucher and another functioning veteran in to go with the kids for that money. There's always a bunch of decent NBA players who fall through the cracks in free agency.

There's a bunch of UFA's we should look at:

Banton, Tre Jones, Boucher obviously, Kennard if he falls through the cracks, NAW, Melton, Brogdon. Should definitely be able to get 2-3 of those.

Mkay...so, unless we make a big move with a salaried player in the summer, this is probably what we're working with next season:

C - Jake
PF - Scottie
SF - Ingram
SG - Barrett
PG - Quickley

6 - Dick
7 - Okai
8 - Boucher, who I think we'll definitely re sign to a 2 yr deal on the cheap
9 - Shead

It gets murky after that though because none of these guys should be given bench spots on a team trying to win game

9 - Walter
10 - Mogbo
11 - Battle
12 - Wiseman

I'd like to see us use the MLE to add shooting and defence. If I could get 2 of NAW, Kennard, Melton, Banton for 12.9 million (we can use bird rights to re sign Boucher now), I do it and hope Boucher-Wiseman is enough size off of the bench for now.

I also think we're going to need to make a decision on of Dick/Okai/Walter/Battle sooner rather than later. I don't see minutes to develop all 4 with Ingram here now.

the cool thing is now we could potentially trade a starter (with some younger stuff added on) for an upgrade in the starting lineup without blowing a hole in the starting lineup.

Like RJ/Quickley + dick/walter + agbaji/battle for a better starting G or something.

That's probably this front office's plan moving forward tbh.

It's tough though, because you'd ideally like to evaluate the guards together before moving on from one unless it was a slam dunk trade. The guys who makes the most sense this summer imo is Jake + Gradey for an upgrade at the 5 but I don't see that move out there.

If it's RJ or IQ we're considering, I think we just chill and evaluate this year unless someone throws something foolish out there at us. Maybe Desmond Bane if JJJ's extension ask is massive and they're internal capped or something because small market.

We're at a weird cross roads though, because the starting unit is playoff quality, but that kid bench is not inspiring imo. It has some okay looking prospects on it, but we can't have a fringe top 10 starting group winning their matchups against oppo starters and then have the kids getting caved in. It's bad for everyone. It's exactly what we did with the last good but not great core. We let a Precious, Malachi, Thad, Trent, Birch, Svi, Yuta, etc, etc group of bench players fuck it up the ass over the course of a few seasons. Honestly, this year isn't that different than the Tampa Massacre. Crazy shit season with injuries, and covid fuckery where we semi fluked into a high lottery pick in a good but not great draft. Returning a core of good but not great players in their early primes (FVV and Pascal were 26, OG 23) and added Scottie 4th overall. That could have been an okay core (it won 48 games the next season) to kickstart the new era, but we fucked it with terrible depth that gutted us night after night.
