OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

View: https://x.com/Ballislife/status/1887388039225512050

what worries me is that a few years ago in an interview BI named Toronto one of his favorite cities in the league.

I don't think it was because of the pleasant neighborhoods.

Its been no secret that the list of teams willing to pay BI is minute, and the finalists for his services us, and the Hawks are 2 teams that traditionally have difficulties attracting/keeping top talent ( at least when they are shit).

Im sure his agent was in his ear telling him about how lovely certain places are

I mean even if they could be in the future plans, i'd still move them. Recoup some assets. Help the tank this year. More minutes for the kids to develop. win win win.

See, all of this talk of the Raptors timeline I keep seeing online is funny to me. I've never seen Masai or Bobby talk about setting the organization in for a long multi season tank. They heard Masai use the word "rebuild" during the summer and everyfuckingone seemed to read between the lines to think that means the organization was committing to basically not even trying to compete for at least 2-3 years, which simply flies in the fucking face of the current roster construction. You're not waiting until IQ is 28, RJ 27, and Scottie 26 to make moves that drag you out of the high lottery.

If that was the timeline, they wouldn't have committed all of this money to 25 yr old IQ.

There is a crazy amount of desire out in Raptorsland for us to be bad, and it's fucking stupid. Media and fanbase alike seem to be upset that we're not trying to tank. I saw a lot of people straight up upset that we traded the Pacers 1st last night, and it's fucking wild. For shits and giggles I took a look at every draft since 2010 last night, and every pick between 17th and 22nd (the Pacers right now would draft 22nd fwiw), and from 2010-2022, here's every notable NBA player taken in those 6 draft slots

Bledsoe, Shumpert, Tobias Harris, Faried, Fournier, Schroder, Delon Wright, Portis, Beasley, Lavert, John Collins, Jarrett Allen, Divincenzo, Huerter, Grayson Allen, NAW, Bitadze, Thybulle, Grant Williams, Tyrese Maxey, Tre Murphy, Jalen Johnson, Eason, Braun, Podzemski, Whitmore, Jaquez Jr.

So that's not a terrible group, my point isn't that the pick is worthless....but you're looking at about a 1/3.5 hit rate on getting a rotation or better player from that slot, about a 1/10 hit rate on a fringe starter or better, a 1/20 hit rate on a good starter and a 1/90 chance on a top 20 NBA player.

There's 4-5 guys on that entire list that I would trade Ingram for straight up

the Bill Simmons of the world are uber confused about the Raps because they are resisting the urge to do the traditional be terrible for 7 years rebuild that almost never works.

yeah i hope they can trade Boucher to a good team. he deserves a chance to shine somewhere.

and we need to get worse this year, and maybe can sign him in the offseason if we want to.

and hopefully we could get something decent for him.

Getting a guy like BI is what I was really hoping they'd do before this season, when it was clear they only had 4 legit nba starters and badly needed a 5th. BI definitely completes the starting lineup with another legit starter, and complements the rest of the lineup nicely as a pretty pure scorer and legit iso guy. The fit makes all sorts of sense to me.

But it kinda feels like also slams a lid on the team's upside. The starting lineup just looks pretty mid. There's definitely room for improvement if all the pieces fit right, which could make all of them more effective in their roles, but it's still hard to see a jump all the way from mid to elite. "Good" seems like this lineup's max upside.

Now that it looks like we have our starting lineup for next year set, tho, and what looks like a pretty good and deep young bench, maybe now we can really force a tank the rest of this year by sitting everyone out as much as possible, and try our best to get a top-4 pick in what i think is a 4-deep draft.

Add a top-end young talent to this group next year could make things really interesting.

The other thing is that even if the starting lineup is just "good", that still might be good enough to give all of the starters good trade value and make it possible for us to swing better trades for star talent going forward.
Caveat to me is what the spacing does to Scottie’s game. Still need a shooter off the bench but Ingram is a legit playmaker who should bring some relief to Scotty. We know they spacing with the right talent can massively change a teams fortunes.
