OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

We should be spending money on pitching this offseason. We have payroll available. Our young position players are cheap. Good pitching will give them an opportunity to win games. And our young prospect pitchers are a few years away from contributing to the big league roster. Who am I kidding? MORE JAIME GARCIA!

I gotta reiterate that given my age vs level obsession, this SWR pickup might actually be huge.

And I have to applaud the FO for targeting one high upside guy they really like instead of a bunch of mediocre.

Yeah Fangraphs had SWR, Kloffenstein and Pardinho as "picks to click" to begin the season as young pitchers. Those three all lock pretty solid this year in low A. All were 45/45+ FV to begin the season and it wouldn't surprise me if they all are 50 FV to start next year. SWR probably looks the best so far though.

Sounds like Giles is hurt. May not get moved before the deadline.

Gotta love that they blamed it on a massage over the all-star break...definitely had nothing to do with using him three days in a row shortly after coming off the DL with elbow inflammation.

Other teams selling pitchers are very annoyed at the Blue Jays return for Stroman, which one rival called “dogs*it.” If that’s all it took to get Stroman, fear is the price goes down for other pitchers under control

teams can’t understand why the Blue Jays made what looks to the industry a deadline desperation trade several days before the deadline.

Yeah, not shocking in the least bit. This front office is a joke when it comes to getting value for trade assets. They seem to make trades for the hell of making trades or don't care to get fair value if it means quantity over quality.

A Stroman return should have commanded some very high end prospects.

Teams are holding onto their stud prospects when you have them on the cheap

I don't see teams letting them go unless its an Archer 3 year service control player

As with any prospect transaction , need to give it time to analyze.

Seems like that SWR is a high end prospect. More I read on him the more I like the deal. I'm not sure what we get out of Kay but hes a near lock to be in the rotation soon. Would've been nice to get more but I'm not sure it's that much of a steal for the Mets as my initial thoughts.

At least they swung for the fences on this one a bit. Only Kay is a Drury/McKinney low risk low reward type here. And even then there are some reports that he might end up a middle of the rotation arm.

Jays are still talking to teams about closer Ken Giles who’s having a terrific year but wasn’t used last night due to what’s thought to be a minor elbow issue.

You know, in fairness, you gotta get these kind of guys too to fill out the roster. If they think SWR is a stud top of the rotation guy, then the trade makes sense. If not, then it doesn’t. We have to see if they are the smartest guys in the room or if all the disparaging grumblings of others are justified.

These 18 year old pickups also buy time for Shapiro and Atkins. When the players they aquire won't be on the team for 4 or 5 years it extends their own employment window.

For personal reasons for Shatkins it's in their best interest to start only targeting players that are a half decade away.

Which again begs the question: Will we compete while Vlad is an affordable Blue Jay?

Rogers is about to get a rude awakening when they see all of their profits gone and ratings/attendance in the tank. They have been pretty consistent in their time owning the Blue Jays to reversing course dramatically when they see their bottom line hurt. They did it under the JP and AA regimes.

Shapiro, like JP before him, sold Rogers a bill of goods about being able to compete for less. I would think just like under JP, if the Jays are trash again next year you will suddenly see some changes.

Sweet irony would be Rogers doing what the Indians did to Shapiro. Come to the realization that he's a below average baseball executive, and push him to the financial/organizational management side of things and bring in a good baseball guy to run baseball ops.

Yeah, SWR is a high end guy, but he's far enough from the show that he's not as highly ranked.

But the reality is that teams just don't tend to trade high end prospects for guys without much control anymore. Even Archer was dealt for a couple post-hype guys (who really turned it around). Very rare to see a legit top-50 prospect dealt, even top-100 guys teams have trouble parting with.

#BlueJays are acquiring Thomas Hatch from #Cubs for David Phelps, per industry source

BaseballAmerica

Hatch, 24, was once ranked as high as No. 8 in the Cubs system after the 2017 season.

He was not in our Cubs' midseason Top 30.

Hatch = almost 25yr old with crappy AAA numbers.

this FO can't help themselves with these guys. and yes, I'm sure his spin rate is good.
