OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

One thing that has been consistent with Shapiro over his 25 years as an MLB executive is that when his plans go sideways he doesn't know how to adjust in the moment to get things back on track.

Unless they were flat out lying this offseason has been a failure.

It's over? Holy crap...I missed the off-season.

Roark is a better pitcher than Teheran and it's not really even close. Even with a rock bottom BABIP Teheran is still very very meh.

That's debatable actually, and anyway, my point was that Teheran has more upside than Roark, not that he was better. That's obvious enough from the fact that Teheran is almost 5 years younger and Roark is very clearly in decline.

As for Teheran's BABIP, it was .266 last year, well below the league average and almost spot on his .268 career BABIP across over 1300 innings. It's clearly a skill. In Teheran's best year (2016), his BABIP was .260 and he was definitely not "meh". Roark had a higher than usual BABIP last year, but he's also been giving up more hard contact every year in his 30s. That trend isn't likely to reverse. It's very unlikely that Roark is as good in 2020 and 2021 as he was in 2018 and 2019 and if he gets much worse he won't be good enough for most MLB rotations.

The main red flag with Teheran is that his fastball velocity has dropped a full 2mph in the last three years. But he has a well above average fastball spin rate, so it might be playable. Anyway, it's not unprecedented for a pitcher to regain a bit of velocity around Teheran's age, even if it is unlikely. His control has also become a big issue, after previously being an asset. Not sure what to make of that.

Again, I'm not upset that they missed on Teheran. Just hope there is more to come.

Even with our good young position players its VERY hard to muster any excitement for this team. The pitching to is so bad and so far behind prospect wise that they are going to waste all this offensive talent.

This management team is so toxic.

Thank goodness Parker was around long enough to convince Atkins to draft Bichette. And hopefully Atkins has learned from that.

When I saw the name Farrell, I wondered if he was related to John. Hoping that he and Bichette are both significantly better than their dads.
