OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

He's getting paid 3 million a season. It doesn't take them out of the Ryu sweepstakes.

I hate Shatkins with a passion. IMO they came here at the wrong time. But even with that in mind I didn't expext them to have this bad of an offseason.

All this "flexibility" goes down the drain in 2 years when Vlad hits arbitration.

With the new rule elininating one out RP and the popularity with openers this guy as a high k multi inning RP could be a gem. 3M is nothing.

I still expect one more SP

It's borderline shocking how a team that was the toast of the country just 4 years ago and had a fairly high payroll the last 10-12 seasons has fallen.

Is it so surprising though?
Many of you here projected this type of behaviour from this management team.
I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe this management team is just following the plan the the Roger's execs had laid out when they hired him. And that Roger's is only wanting to make as much money possible with an eye to selling off the Jay's before having to spend major money on the existing stadium or a new stadium.
Jmho ....

Can Rogers sell the team with a condition that they have the rights to the television broadcasts for the next 10 or 15 years?
Or would mlb frown upon that?
Just curious ...

Just look at the time period when they hired Shapiro. Just the worst guy at the worst timing ever.
Blue Jays so fast are an afterthought.

I don't think Atkins is anywhere close to being let go. He'll survive at least through 2021, no matter what happens this year.

They will claim that 2020 is really only year 2 of the rebuild. Next off-season it will be more of the same garbletalk culminating in a couple of low/no upside value additions.

If they're still awful in 2021, I can see Atkins being let go although again, he is Shapiro's guy, so one last shot in 2022 wouldn't be out of the question.

Shapiro is here as long as he wants to be, IMO. He's plays the part perfectly for Rogers.

I agree with uncus that Shatkins are doing exactly what Rogers wants them to do, so in that sense they're not in a whole lot of danger.

I think they're perfectly happy with getting a safe return on their investment with the appreciation of the franchise's value and the income that comes from the baseline level of ticket sales and TV viewership they get from the hardcore Jays fans out there, plus the 480+ hours of "free" programming the Jays give them to put on their networks during the spring & summer.

They're also perfectly happy having a couple of guys who aren't going to make them eat any more Tulowitzky-esque contracts, come to them pushing for higher budgets, or to push them to let them shell out $100M+ on UFA contracts.

Revenue dropped $13 mill from 2016 high last year. If it goes back down to pre-playoff run levels of $240-50 mill that is close to $30 mill a year they are giving up.

But they are spending half on payroll, and Shittwins aren't threatening to spend more, or put grass in or anything crazy like that.

So yeah, they are probably happy.
