OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Gurriel is legit awful defensively.

He has no idea how to track a ball.

does have a nice arm though.

Grades out above average according to UZR, slightly below average according to DRS.

Grichuk grades out as a minor abortion in CF, mixed results in RF. Was slightly below average in RF last year, great numbers in 134 inning this year.

Last 5yrs uzr/150

Grichuk CF -7.3
Grichuk RF +4.7
Grichul LF +1.8
Gurriel LF +0.8

and of course Gurriel's entire value comes from his arm, which fades as soon as teams stop running on him.

Range

Grichuk CF -8.3 (arm 0.0)
Grichuk RF 4.2 (arm +1.4)
Grichuk LF 1.0 (arm -0.6)
Gurriel LF -5.7 (arm +6.9)

Grichuk shouldn't be playing CF anyway, but we knew that already. Stay healthy, George. No issue rotating Lourdes/Grichuk/Dickerson in LF/DH when Dickerson is healthy. Dickerson has 122 WRC+ against RHP and 89 vs LHP so although he's not a true masher at least he's not a complete abortion vs LHP.

It's sort of a weird observation, because having an excellent defensive skill is part of being a good defender. And if Gurriel's arm prevents players from even trying to take an extra base, then the other team is taking less bases. This is good.

Also I think Gurriel could still become a solid all around MLB OF. They had enormous patience with Teoscar and it seems to have paid off. Gurriel played so much IF in the past, he still has something to learn out there. I'm also not sure why they've never given him a shot in CF. He's fast, has a good arm, and used to play SS.

If you combine Ohtani's hitting and pitching his WAR equals Vladdy.
I mean that makes vladdy look even more insane.

It speaks highly of both of them. Like, crazy to see Ohtani can match someone doing as well offensively as Vlad, and crazy that Vlad can match an 8-tool player like Ohtani.

If the Jays can sneak into the playoffs, that is probably the push that Vlad needs to win the MVP ahead of Ohtani. If both miss, then I'm pretty sure that Ohtani will get more MVP votes just for how crazy his season is. Although ironically, if the Angels have a miraculous second half, it will almost surely because Trout comes back and blows both of them out of the water. But Ohtani will likely still get more credit towards an MVP win. Of course, if Vlad wins a triple crown, wonder if we see a repeat of the Cabrera-Trout debates again.
