OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

If we don't give it to him, someone else will happily offer him 14/7 or similar.

He's a top 2-3 player in the NHL, even if he comes off of a down season (which is hardly a guarantee), you pay the man and move on. Even in an unsustainably bad slump (shooting roughly half of his career average at the moment) he's 16th in points and 17th in goals. His worst stretch of hockey in the last 4-5 years and he's been a fringe top 5 centre over that period. His level of play during a slump is better than Tavares playing some of the best hockey of his life.
 
I'm expecting he picks it up and becomes otherworldly again soon enough, but we have to be careful here. If he's only good for 40 this year and next and will make $13.5M, then what's Marner going to make? Only a few bucks less than that, you can be sure. That's an extra $5M of payroll going to the two most expensive guys already. And then what does newly arrived 40 goal PPG Nylander get? $10M? Those raises amount to another $8M player wrapped up in guys we already have.

I feel like Matty and Marner's raises were paid to adequately compensate them for the guys they were expected to turn into. But if they're not doing anything different than what they've already been doing, I don't think it'd be fair for them to hold up the team for significant raises. I can understand them each wanting another token $1M per, but getting into the $13ms and beyond is insane.
 
Re-sign Matthews or don’t, what matters as a fan is that they control risk.

Maybe the Leafs should being Shapiro in as a consultant.
 
Cool. We should still be doing everything we can to get them to keep their numbers down. We can’t afford $8m of raises when the cap won’t go up near that amount. Half of that is really all we should be shooting for.
 
It’s basically up to Matthews. If he wants to give us a discount great buy he’s justified in asking for whatever he wants. Since the last deal he’s only won multiple rockets, a hart and a Lindsay with another 2 years to go.

Dubas doesn’t have a great bargaining position.

don’t forget Tavares will be coming off/his cap hit will be going down too. With massive cap increases coming it should all come out in the wash. But Matthews/Marner/Willy can easily ask for more money.
