OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I don't like Kyle Gibson, so I'm glad they didn't sign him. As for # of SP, that is my point, we don't know what will happen because only a few teams have signed anyone yet.

Obviously the Jays need 1 starter, ideally 2. But they already have a 1-2-3 in Manoah-Gausman-Berrios and could conceivably get a #5 out of Pearson/Kikuchi/White/Zulueta. They should also bring in a couple of veteran depth guys to start in AAA, maybe one is good enough to challenge for a rotation spot as well.
The goal should be to improve the rotation on last year.

Stripling went out of his skull with a 3 win season. They have shown no real indication to improving on that, targeting shittier guys like Heaney and Gibson, and reports are they want to give Kikuchi/White a shot at the 5

The top of the rotation is fine, and Berrios should be better than last year. Heaney and Gibson would be solid enough #4 guys, and Heaney's got that strikeout upside as well. They could also re-sign Stripling. There's a bunch of dudes still available.

None of those guys are likely to make the rotation better than last year, save for Rodon or a trade.

Banking on Kikuchi/White is a cheap coward move

Don't get me wrong, they need a #4 at minimum, and definitely should bring in 1 or 2 guys to compete for the #5 starter's job. I would love to see Pearson take it. And I agree Kikuchi/White should be no better than 6/7 to start the season.

But there's still plenty of time for signings and trades, is my point.

Yeah the problem if you want Stripling or someone better is now you're spending 25M on a #4 starter, someone who might not even pitch for you in a playoff series.

They need a #4, but it just has to be someone who is decent. If they bring in someone there, the team is still one of the top few rotations in the AL if Berrios can remember how to pitch.

This entire premise is unrealistic though.

First Nate is a RP. Closed.

Second, bringing in guys to compete? Nothing about this offseason indicates anyone good is taking a major league deal to fight for a job.

The plan, should have been. Stripling, or Stripling upgrade, which limits you to Rodon ( im going to give them a pass on Verlander/Degrom/Kershaw/etc), Bassitt, Eovaldi, Senga. Now if you dont want to bring in Rodon at 6 years, i might i'd disagree, cause, fuck it, try to win, but sure, i get it. Bassitt, Eovaldi, and Senga all represent actual upgrades for the team, and i've only heard them linked to the latter ( and he visited 7 cities, none in Canada)

These Gibson/Smyly/Cueto/Kluber/Heaney etc 4/5 types should only be Kikuchi/White replacements, not Stripling replacements. Which they appear ( not guaranteed, appear to be)

Speaking of Kikuchi/White. Im not saying cut them, yet, I'd give Yusei all the time in the world to become a high leverage K beast in the pen, and I'd give White a shot as a long man, but not be afraid to cut him if need be

Don't disagree here, I think they are looking at all these guys (Bassitt and Senga have been rumoured), I would just add that Heaney and probably Gibson (despite my dislike for him) belong in this group. As mentioned, Stripling is still out there too.

And I agree on Kikuchi, could be great in the pen if they don't trade him. It's certainly within the realm of possibility that he can figure it out in the rotation, but he's going to have to earn it and they should have a better option to start the season.

Kikuchi absolutely should not be the 5th starter heading into Spring. If he comes into camp and earns it, maybe he ends up like Stripling did last year or something. Injuries happen, and you need depth, so having him as a potential swing arm makes sense.

I do think you really want one more "name" as the 4th starter - Stripling, Bassit, Manaea, Heaney, etc... all would be solid options in that spot. Someone in that 10-15M range.

And then I think the team also needs to bring in someone else as the de facto #5 starter, but maybe more of a wildcard option. Someone like Lorenzen, Jordan Lyles, Wade Miley, Chad Kuhl, Zach Davies, etc... Whoever of them comes in cheap, maybe they swing to the bullpen or just gets released if they don't work out, but who is at least another veteran arm.

In any event, there's still a good number of guys like that out there. Now that we're seeing the big names all signed, whoever didn't get the top names should be changing course and fighting for Rodon now. I think once he signs, that will be the last domino and the rest of the mid-tier options should be able to sort it out.

Whoever keeps suggesting Sean Manaea, no thanks, he brutes

Last year in SD he was weird. His xFIP/xERA/SIERA all were pretty good (4ish), but his FIP was bad (4.5) and ERA worse (almost 5). His HR/FB ratio is bad, and last year he moved to being much more of a flyball pitcher, which is obviously not a great combination.

If he came with a cheap 1-year deal (like 1/8), then I'd be happy to hope he can get back to what he was a few years ago. If he costs like 2/24 or more, then pass.

If we are only adding one SP, i want no part of him.

Think i'd rather bet on a Kikuchi rebound to be honest.
