OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

From today's Jeff Passan's dispatch:
Given that, it would be foolish to count out any high-revenue team, though by now the field for Ohtani's services has winnowed, sources said. The Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, who were among the initial group of suitors, have turned their attention to other players, sources said. Among those confirmed by sources to be still in the bidding: the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and Angels. The San Francisco Giants have long had a fondness for Ohtani, though where they stand in these sweepstakes is unknown.

What is interesting here, there is only one eastern team "confirmed" from Jeff. What if Ohtani wants to play of the east coast? And not out west anymore? Ohtani has been treated like a Superstar since his late teens, from the Media and Culture at large. Couple of the larger "Star" cultures are Japan and US. The one thing Toronto and Canada are good at is how we treat our "star culture". Maybe he wants a respite from that glare and a chance to be himself? It is not like Toronto isn't a "World Class" City. And he was not born in the US, so does it matter to him where he lives?

I don't know 🤷‍♂️

I feel oddly bullish on this. Even if it meant trading one or both of Bo & Vlad, it’s much wiser to spend that money on Ohtani imo. Plus you still get a couple runs before you have to move them, and maybe the added success & revenue from having Ohtani helps you afford their extensions.

…and from Ohtani’s perspective Canada is remarkably popular amongst Japanese expats, and maybe he grew up loving Anne of Green Gables.

You’re feeling the same buzz too…

Put it this way if they’re trying to lockdown as many season tickets as possible, why wouldn’t they tell the agent to make sure they’re there till the end like a nudge nudge favour or the insiders anyway. They NEED those ticket sales after that disaster and the investment in Reno’s. Only thing they have right now is to float mayyyybe Shohei, otherwise, are you buying those tickets? Nahhh

There’s gonna be a lot of disappointment in this thread pretty soon if ya’ll are getting your hopes up for Ohtani lol more likely Soler or Candy and some meh fill in players they’ll lawyer talk up as having good underlying numbers and positive upticks in yada yadas, really excited with this group etc etc. The typical nonsense from Shatkins

I struggle with the idea of Ihtani signing here without being convinced Bo and Vlad aren’t here long term. Or he probably has an opt out after 2 at minimum

I don’t think that kind of thing actually happens. He’s not making demands from teams over who will be on their 2026 rosters.
