OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Burnes is a FA (or out of contract?) next summer and is a Boras client. So you know that he is going to the market next summer.

So it is a one year rental. A "go for it" move if ya weeelll.

Yeah, on its own, it's not a terrible deal, although MIL got back some volatile prospects - both Ortiz and Hall are anywhere from in the 60s to just outside of the top-100 lists. It's not actually that far off like what Machado was dealt for a few years ago as a rental.

But this absolutely shows the power of a deeper farm system. The Jays just don't have the players at that level to be able to deal from to get a deal like this. Although I would definitely like the team to take a run at Adames now - I'll forgive a lot if we could find a way to add him to the team.

For the team otherwise, it's frustrating to be seeing Vlad and Bo inch closer and closer to free agency, and just not see the urgency of the organization to try. Not saying you blow your wad and trade Tiedemann for Burnes, but it feels like the team should be doing something to try to keep up with NYY and BAL.

The shine is off of Hall. I think it’s like if the Jays had traded Pearson about a year ago, except Hall never reached those heights.

The draft pick is probably the most valuable piece in the package. I don’t think it’s an issue of whether the Jays or any other team could have matched, Milwaukee probably liked Baltimore’s guys more.

What stings as a Jays fan is a division rival getting a great player at a price that will not hurt them at all. It’s not like they traded Jackson Holliday for a pitching upgrade. Hall and Ortiz are both turning 26 this year and were probably going to spend the year in AAA.

Yeah, that's a good comp for Hall. He could put it together, but it doesn't seem like that's going to be a rotation piece, so his upside is limited. Ortiz I think still could be a decent player, but has little upper end upside. Like a Kiner-Falefa type, really - might be able to string some time together and not hurt you.

But yeah, neither guy really would have factored in BAL this year, especially with Holliday on the cusp of a callup. Sure, Burnes is just there for one year, but he insulates them a lot, especially if you don't trust Bradish to repeat from last year. Their rotation is still weak overall, but adding a legit #1 guy is huge.

Orioles payroll, after adding Burnes, is $89M. It was $74 million earlier in the day.

Imagine our admin with 1/3 the budget. How terrible would their team be?
Blue Jays will have to sell this year when they finish 4th. Not sure I trust this management to rebuild though.

Couple of things:

So the prevailing thought here is that you want the Jays to be historically bad for a couple of years - Houston, Baltimore, TB. Cool.

All of you guys HATED the Jays rebuilding years (and they didn't lose 100+ games).

Also, we don't trust most of the projection systems anymore? Can I get a reason why we shouldn't trust them? I am open minded, so please inform.
