OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Prey tell, how many times have the Jays picked in the top 5 in the Amateur draft with Shatkins involved? 1? And they traded him for a quasi ace in his prime.

Very easy to have a young talented team with no payroll when picking 4 straight years in the top 5.

The Jays never did this. They wanted to win, like how everyone in this thread wanted. Everyone said that they won't spend, then they did. Now it is, "they spent on OLD guys and have an expensive team, which makes it super easy, barely an inconvenience to make the playoffs".

So what is it? Tanking for 5 straight years to pick in the top 5? or spend (which Rogers have never done) like a big market team and easily make the playoffs?
This list of Orioles draft picks… the first two were drafted by Duquette. And the only Elias pick on the 2023 team that won 101 games was Rutschman. The rest are still in the minors.

So, no, having top 5 picks is not why the Orioles have an excellent young team on a shoestring budget. It is partly why they have a very bright future though.

The fuck does the amount of times they drafted high have to do with anything? MLB teams "rebuild" without tanking all the time. You're building a weirdo false dichotomy like this is the NHL or something where the only place to find star players is at the top of the draft.

This really isn't that complicated. Shatkins spent a short period "trying" to compete with half measures like Kendrys Morales, then "rebuilt" by not actually trading his assets away and letting them die on the vine or walk away for nothing, and then yes, finally spent money the type of money some of us have wanted to see spent, but spent the bulk of it on 30+ yr olds, many of which the type of players that their shitty minor league system should be generating for dirt cheap (back of the rotation arms, 10+ million dollar utility players, etc)

The Jays have a young talented team. They just aren’t doing a great job surrounding them with enough talent to win.

Just like they didn’t do a great job of surrounding their old talented team with enough talent to win.

Young?

They have 3 youngish guys and Manoah might be done

Yup, when I think of trade value there's virtually no difference between prime Vlad Guerrero, prime Bo Bichette and 35-year-old J.A. Happ.
