OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

KC just locked up their star SS, Bobby Witt Jr., for 11-years. $290 million.

Of course, our young stars would have never agreed to an extension like that because their dads played in the majors, so they don’t need the money.
problem is Flabi wants 400 mil

Vladdy wins his arbitration case. $19.9 million this year.

The Jays payroll is at $250M for luxury tax purposes. They’re already into the tax and the next tier of penalty is at $257M. Probably fair to say they’re not making any other significant signings. Although maybe they can still work something out where they add Belt and dump Espinal and stay under $260M.

we'll probably never know what he was asking for, but I do agree they should have locked him up back then
on the Blair and Barker show about 2 years ago , it was mentioned he was looking at 450 to ink long term term

Both agreed , no way they hand that out to him and given the family money he has he will wait it out

How do they determine arbitration numbers

Vladi had another disappointing season why the raise ?

Players always get a raise. There's almost a formula to them as well sometimes - the more awards you get, the more HR you hit, you get like X dollars. The fact that he was an All-Star last year despite not really putting up All-Star numbers might even have been enough to push them to pick Vlad's number.

Also keep in mind the system is that both teams submit a number, and the arbitrator picks one or the other. Even if had they come up with a number it might be 18.5 that was closer to the Jays offer, for some reason they might have decided they didn't want to go that low and chose Vlad's.

I can’t believe they went to arbitration over $1m with their best bat and basically only hope at taking a step forward next year. You probably could have signed falafel for $1m less, or not signed him at all, if that milly was an issue.

Lots of FA still out there, including Bellinger and a few other big names. FA of some interest from mlbtr’s top 50:

2. Bellinger
4. Snell
6. Montgomery
7. Chapman
16. Soler
20. JDM
30. Clevinger
38. Urshela
40. Whit
45. Belt
49. Hendricks

Unranked:
Adam Duval, Tommy Pham, Ryu, Votto

The Jays are spreading the FA risk around to fill many holes in the roster, again. They’re spending $39 million this year on IKF, Turner, KK, and Rodriguez. None of those guys are full time players, Yariel probably starts the year in AAA.

How is our payroll even high? Who the fuck do we have? Feels like we only lost guys this offseason.

Yeah, the Jays are definitely the team this year you look at the payroll and are like wtf how did it get this way?

The reason is basically because we wasted the pre-arbitration Vlad and Bo years, even they are going to make about 30M combined this year. The only "cheap" players left on the roster are like Romano, Kirk, and Manoah. Pretty much everyone else we're paying full market rates for, which adds up. It's all those 25M Springer, 18M Berrios, 10M Green deals that just add up. Even the stuff like 6M to Yimi, 4M to Cavan, 7.5M to IKF, big money to essentially utility players.
