I wonder if they’d consider a stint in the minors for Kirk. He has always been a good hitter, still only 25 but this slump is getting a bit out of hand (going back to last year).

It could maybe even be a face-saving injury rehab for some reason. I’m sure he has a few bruises.

I dunno. He's actually still hitting fine for a backup C. And his defensive metrics still look good.

If he's just a 90wrc+ guy (with a low babip blip so far this year) because his power was never really real then he's still a very usable catcher.

Kirk can be a lot more than a decent backup C though. Maybe a couple of weeks in Buffalo helps him to find his bat again. Just a thought.

Payton Henry has a 136 wrc+ in AAA right now, decent chance he can be an adequate fill-in while Kirk works it out in the minors.

Yeah, given what we've seen of him a few years ago, you need Kirk to be more than just a decent backup. Odds are you don't sign Jansen, and then you need to rely on Kirk to be your full-time starter next year. The more he struggles the less ABs available for him to work through it. Getting more regular reps in the minors behind the plate and as a DH maybe could help.

For the long term good of this team, I really don’t want Atkins and Shapiro in charge of the deadline. They’ll likely sell futures to try to sneak into the playoffs again. And they’d pass on opportunities to retool or start a rebuild because they know it won’t be them in charge.

If this team doesn’t bounce back in the next month or so, it’s time to clean house.
