OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I'd like this alot more if we were any good at developing arms, but it seems like good value

Im trying to get info on the guy we took in round 2

None of this aligns with the zeke scouting report, so I have to take it with a grain of salt.

Sometimes just feels like people want to be pessimistic.
"Oh, he was ranked higher than he was picked. Something is definitely wrong with him, why did we pick him?"
"Oh, he was ranked below where he was picked? Why did we stretch for him?"
"Oh, he was ranked around where he was picked? Why was the team lazy and didn't pick [insert player who dropped] or [insert long shot pick]?"

QB build at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds. Transfer from Purdue. Short arm action, upright lower half throughout delivery. Uncorks with quite a bit of effort and violence about the head. Fastball holds its line at the top of the zone, sits 91-95. Slider and curveball shapes run together a little bit but play nicely off the fastball around the top of the zone. Changeup flashes bat-missing action. Chance for four viable pitches and backend starter role.

Sounds like a high floor arm. But basically once you get to the second round, it's already a pretty big crapshot of what can happen.

Fangraphs Analysis of Jays Day 1:
Two good college arms for the Jays here, with Trey Yesavage being the headliner because of his unexpected fall. The Jays’ pick was very difficult to ascertain during the draft, not only for me but for several teams picking behind them. It took a while, which didn’t give the impression that they couldn’t wait to call in their selection. I’ve liked Khal Stephen as a late-blooming arm since he was in Purdue’s bullpen just a couple years ago. He’s less developed than most big program college starters but has the build, fastball ride, and breaking stuff of a good starter.

Athletic overview of Yesavage:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5609902/2024/07/14/mlb-draft-trey-yesavage-blue-jays/ (although it says almost nothing about him, other than he's one of the more developed arms)

Sounds like a shit second rounder

It’s difficult to get excited by an Atkins/Shapiro first or second rounder because they’re almost always bad. In 9 years here, they have Manoah and Bichette to show for it. Shapiro had a poor draft record in Cleveland as well, while Atkins oversaw a player development program where first rounders routinely went to fail. They had one good first round pick outcome while Atkins was in charge (Lindor) and one good second rounder (Kipnis). So that’s going back over 20 years of drafting with this dynamic duo and they’ve produced a total of 4 good players in the first two rounds, including Manoah.

Also their scouting director, Shane Farrell, may be another nepo baby hire. Went from being a scouting assistant and area scout for the Cubs for 9 years directly to Jays scouting director.

Hard to even give them any credit for Bo...it was one of AA's scouts and Tony LaCava that pushed hard for them to draft him

Problem with baseball drafts is that outside of like the top 10 guys, everyone has such a low chance of making it. A #20 pick has like a 50/50 shot of even making MLB let alone having any sort of career.

But yeah, the Jays picks over the last bit have been, ahem, underwhelming
