OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Shi was on with an update of sorts

20-25M to spend, unless of course they have a special budget for a special player which could be any one of Max Fried or Boras clients.

Team is being aggressive at meetings ( fuck off, especially with that 25M)

Nothing is maybe close with Vlad but both sides might want to wait until Soto signs ( Vlad sure as fuck should)

Wait and see on Bo

This all sounds like bullshit just to sound like they tried. Even if i believe in the special mystery budget i dont think any prominent name chooses to come here with no Vlad extended.

So what’s the update?

This team can fuck off. Management gotta go. Until then I don’t give a shit.

Management is an extension of what the owners want. Ownership must think these guys are doing a great job for them to still be around.

Like maybe they do overspend on someone who cant help but take the stupid offer, like a Pete Alonso or Luis Severino? Or going nuts for Alex Bregman? But it will be one of the A- or B+ FA that are going to age terribly, and frankly any SP bothers me even Fried, who is really good, but the fact every year they need a new expensive SP FA cause they cant develop fuck all really bothers me.

This report is from Jeff Passan (he is legit), but always take everything with a huge grain of salt..

Report: Soto meeting with Blue Jays (first), Red Sox this week

If you are even remotely serious, Vlad needs to be in the pitch meeting, assuring Soto he will work out an extension, along with the club.

This is probably just noise though, and Soto's agents would be insane to ignore a meeting request from the team that wants to hang a runner up in Shohei sweeps banner

Also amazing to me that Rogers is willing to spend 700 million on one player but only allowing the team 20-25 million to improve itself.
Since MLB has strengthened the "Competitive Balance Tax" (CBT), the better way to think about salaries is how we now think about the NBA's luxury tax. If one goes over certain tiers, there are harsher and harsher penalties. MLB wanted to have a more parity among their teams and not just big markets getting all of the top FA.

The Jays are 25m away from the "First Surcharge", so it doesn't make sense for them to go over it unless it is the final piece.

But they will "blow" their budget on a top 5 player. Because Marketing.

2022-present

The 2022 CBA introduced three separate surcharge thresholds that increased on an annual basis. Additionally, any team with a payroll above the second surcharge threshold has its first draft pick moved back 10 places in the draft order, although if the team’s first pick is among the top six picks, the penalty will apply to the team’s second-highest pick.[14]
