It's one thing to go out and try for him. But they need to read the room before doing moves like trading for more IAFA space. That deal should 100% not have been done until they have a firm agreement from him.
Now, not only do you lose on the player you want, you're stuck with some dead space for a player who's realistically not any better than Loperfido, and who has absolutely no upside. They could have just rolled up a bunch of 20$ bills and smoked them, at least that wouldn't cost the team towards the luxury tax limits.
