Ehh, a bunch of bad thinking goes into that kind of stuff though. Handedness simply doesn't matter outside of it's impact on specific results. If we were desparate for a left handed hitter instead of a hitter than can handle RHP, they've fucked up.

Also fwiw, Teo's numbers in LF are pretty much dead nuts average over the last few years (bad in RF, granted). Easily could have kept Teo and still brought in Varsho. Teo would be a defensive upgrade in LF over the Whit/Biggio experience that I'm sure we'll see a bunch of out there.

as for the 1 yr contract mattering at all...fucking why? If you're trying to win in 2023, and that's the year you have him under contract for, let's go. Worry about 2024 later.
 
Well based on the WAR value measurement there it’s not meaningfully upgraded.

and that’s a lot of the offseason really. They are better at different things. Have they actually improved? Probably not. They haven’t gotten worse either though.

If Berrios and Vlad rebound that would help but that was true at the start of the offseason.

It's bad thinking to want to add a LHB to the middle of a lineup filled with RHB? Okay. That's news to ... every GM in the league.

Also, the 1 yr contract doesn't matter other than the fact that at the end of the year you have to either sign an extension that would probably be ill-advised, or get something for him now, which is what they did. With RP also a position of need.
 
Berrios probably bounces back a bit.

this is def a big dick swing trade. Would’ve liked more maybe. But Varsho probably rakes at the dome batting between Vlad and Bo. Not upset with this at all.

couple more moves. Round out the roster. Go all in.
 
I do agree that Vlad will likely be the biggest improvement to this team overall though. He was pretty great 2 years ago but dropped off to some extent this past year. Just never looked quite right, but he's still just 23 years old (most players haven't even made their debut at that age yet) and I am expecting a monster season.
 
They're definitely going all in on OF defense. That's going to be a big change from last year. The team's going to be playing a lot more 2-1 or 3-2 games than they did before.

To be clear. Im rooting for the New York Mets to fail hilariously but i think Steve Cohen is good for baseball. Eventually he's going to force other owners to try and win and pay the players properly.

Also, having the only Cohen in the NL is a good thing

Jays only have one bench spot committed to at the moment with Whit/Espinal taking up a spot. They have interesting in house options in Lopez/Horowitz/Barger that are on the 40 man and could push for a job, but i suspect the team will be looking at 2 of these FA ( and trades) and the addition of Varsho removes the need for a spot wasted on a bum 3rd C.

I’d say they get Grossman since they’ve been interested for awhile but who’s the backup 1B? I think they need one now unless it’s Biggio. Mancini gives them the OF/1B/DH versatility but he won’t be cheap

The handedness doesn't matter, the result does.

Guessing it is Biggio. I like Mancini too but he’s a far better player than Vlad backup and 4 way DH platoon. I’d kick around the idea of an Aguilar sort

Grossman makes the most sense. On the surface he looks cooked but he mashed LHP which is what we need
