OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

So I am going to throw a grenade in here (because it has been pretty quiet recently and I haven't gotten over the fact that I was told that I am in a cult and that I should just take the L)

Anyhoo.... with a month left to go in this disappointing season (or about 25ish games left) lets see how our favourite players are doing (and I will give this update at the end of the season).

Vlad Jr has really turned his season around and is having one of his best ever season. I do wonder what his next contract will turn out to be, but with this season of his, would 30 mil x 10 work?

Since the last time we talked about Dalton Varsho, he has added an extra fWAR to his season totals (maybe because he is playing CF constantly?) and has brought his bat back to league average while Moreno has been injured (too be fair, when Varsho was discussed last he was also injured) and hasn't added anything to his season total. Varsho is second on the Jays in fWAR and interestingly would be second on the Diamondbacks in fWAR today. I wonder if they do that trade again or ask for Kirk, as Kirk is only a year older than Moreno?

Weirdly, for people on his board who has given up on him, Alejandro Kirk has now matched Moreno's fWAR while still under water with the bat but with AMAZING defensive metrics, all while playing 3 less games then Moreno. Kirk has been "hot" for him in the second half posting a wRC+ of 100 - which paired with his amazing defence might make him the most valuable catcher in baseball. I wonder if we could trade him for Jackson Holliday ;) ?

IKF has maintained his 2 fWAR pace, though his second half he has put up a wRC+ of 62. Maybe the Jays hitting staff isn't as incompetent as we thought (still not great).

Matt Chapman is having his best season since 2018 and 2019 with a fWAR of 4.4, beating anything he did as a Jay. Maybe he just likes the West Coast?

Season Totals (no rate stats included, which is probably me just cherry-picking):

Vlad: GP: 136, 167 wRC+, 4.8 fWAR
Chapman: GP: 134, 118 wRC+, 4.4 fWAR
Varsho: GP: 128, 102 wRC+, 3.3 fWAR
Kirk: GP: 83, 88 wRC+, 2.2 fWAR
Moreno: GP: 86, 104 wRC+, 2.2 fWAR

BOOOOOOOMMMMMM flame away.

the wild thing is Kirk has caught up to Moreno even on controlling the running game, which was supposed to be Moreno's big defensive strength and Kirk's big weakness. In terms of framing and blocking Kirk has always been way ahead of Moreno.

and yeah, Chapman should obviously have been re-signed. one of the front office's best moves was that trade, and then they just let him go.

Chappy like Bellinger and Snell didnt get their bag cause teams had no interest in overpaying them

Not going anywhere near paying him now at 32 next season

Clement and Barger on the cheap is a better option

They arent Chapman level but younger and can platoon

Vladdy moves past Ohtani into 4th with a 171wrc+. Next up is Witt at 173. Soto in 2nd has been coming back down to earth a bit and is at a reachable 180.

Top-5 wRC+ seasons in club history:

* 1. Bautista '11: 180
* 2. Olerud '93: 179
* 2. Delgado '00: 179
* 4. Guerrero '24: 171 --> in progress
* 5. Guerrero '21: 166

Going to be awesome watching a top 5 hitter leave in free agency or traded for junk because this dumb management was so risk adverse and penny pinched signing him when they could’ve got him on a good deal the last couple years
