OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

It wasn't unreasonable, but it also wasn't a signal from the front office that they wanted him to be here his entire career, saw him as a centrepiece of the franchise, etc. The only year his arby award wasn't within screaming distance of that guaranteed 21 million was the first year. You're asking a kid coming off of a MVP calibre season as a 22 yr old to give up 3 years of free agent money to do what? Take a bit more over the first 4 years and then way less over the final 3?

It's not insulting, but it's not the type of offer you make if you're really trying to get him signed either.
Acuna signed for less but he was 21 and off of a 1000 ops season. And how do you make that offer then drop it.

Acuna was a bit of a special case though. Very poor family growing up, gets thrown multi multi generational money at 21 yrs old and chose to look after his family. If Acuna was a 2nd generation MLB'er whose old man made 120 million and he didn't have the entire family's future on his back he turns that one down too.

Tatis being offered a 14/340 at a similar point in his career is probably a better comparable.

Not this front office. Everyone knew from the second they were hired it was going to be this nickel and dime, lawyer talk mumbo jumbo but I didn’t think they’d be stupid enough to let a franchise player who is beloved by the entire country and is Canadian that actually was willing to stay long term just walk away. And they’ll get very little to nothing in return. The most we can hope for return at this point is their pink slips after he and Bo walk and and we have to rebuild for 15 years.

Like buddy said, you offer him that Tatis deal and just like all his buddies at that age and time, he takes that and we have our centrepiece but nope, defence horny, risk adverse, according to my calculation idiots had to screw that up too. AA would’ve had Vlad locked up and Bo or would’ve have made a great deal for Bo and a good farm.
Yeah. And the crazy part is the Tatis deal adds 7 years and 200m on the offer, less than 30m a season. Instead of that, the team will have to spend probably 150-200m more on him over the course of his career to keep him.

Eloy Jimenez to Rays on a minor league deal.

He might be cooked, but he's still young and posted a 140 WRC a few years ago, for a team with a terrible offense and a hole at DH, this feels like fucking negligence.

Just so, so much incompetence from Shatkins.

Some thoughts from those notes

- A club should basically never go to arbitration with a player they want to keep long term. Pay the extra few dollars, it's well, well worth it to not damage your relationship with your top players. These guys will all say the "it's just business" line when questioned later, but they're humans and it hurts to have a team/org you have positive feelings about sit on the other side of the table and talk shit about you to try to save money.

- Chasing Ohatani and then Soto without locking up Vlad was fucking stupid. Negligence. Vlad's price going up after both instances is perfect.

- It really does feel like Shatkins is slow rolling him so that when he walks they can pull this same bullshit they do with these FA's they were oh so close to getting. He's gone. Enjoy his last year here.

I can’t believe they’re fucked this up so bad and ruined and relationship with a 25 year old star homegrown talent and still have jobs. It’s embarrassing and incompetence. I hope if he doesn’t sign that it’s the end of this regime and nobody buys tickets for this crap and sorry excuse for management. Ed Rogers should be ashamed he let them screw this up so royally. Jays were finally talked about as a top tier exciting, dangerous team again and then Shatkins sent them back to the shadows. Joke. Will be fun to hear Atkins slither around with his words when there’s no extension by Spring.

Similar to the leafs signing JT without locking up the young core first to reasonable contracts. Lucked out that Nylander still wanted to stay here after the whole hold out thing.
