OT: Vacations

I don't mind cold *too much* but man these last couple winters have felt super gloomy, dark, and depressing.

Definitely nice to get to a sunny spot if you're able.

They've convinced us to move to somewhere that winter is mythical.

Winter is bullshit, full stop.

Winter itself is fine.

But our lifestyles and society do not function properly during winter. Which makes winter unpleasant.

Like, fresh snowfall is beautiful. Walking through the woods looking at the fresh snowfall, fucking great.

Getting anywhere in a modern city while it's snowing though? Good fucking luck. Our infrastructure is just not built to accommodate snow or winter weather really at all.

I'd like to go through a winter in a country that actually has proper infrastructure (i.e. Scandinavia) and see if/how it changes my perspective.

Family is going to Disney in January. Have a 5 and 3 year old.

How much am I going to hate my life ?

Cold never really bothered me in the past....but with every passing year, I realize life is better with full sun at 25C.

Like you mentioned, the lack of daylight in mid December hits hard

Yeah, the wild swing in day length is bullshit. Some of the projects I shoot require twilight, so in mid summer I'm still out at 9pm getting raw files ffs, not getting home until 9:30-10pm. Mid winter the fucking sunset is at 4:30-4:45. Clown shoes. Sunset in the tropics is basically 6-7pm all year

Vancouver is truly a shit winter city. Aside from the proximity to mountains. Cold, but without snow. No sun for months. Rain every day. Dark out at 4pm. It’s the worst of all worlds.

That’s the cocaine talking

Imagine how much stuff you could get done with your kids if you were on coke....in like 2 hours you could help them finish their homework, go to the park, throw the ball around, knock parent-teacher interview out (try not to sleep with their teacher...it will be a challenge because of your obvious charm), teach them how to ride a bike and come up with awesome ideas for what to do with the 90 minutes you still have left.

I like winter with proper snow and cold, but logistics in large cities do suck. The best organized city I’ve seen for all that in these parts is Quebec City. They have snow removal down to an exact science. That said, one needs a lot of cargo to enjoy winter and obviously do not underestimate its capacity to strand and freeze. (But I could say the same thé US southwest to strand and bake.)

What I loathe is the freezing rain, ice pellets and slushy rain in winter. It’s fucken garbage.

yah you'd hate Hali winters for sure.

a Hali special starts with snow, turns to sleet, ends as rain, and leaves you with piles of slush that turn to ice each night and then back to slush each day.
