OT: Vacations

full disclosure - I've never been to LA. but based on what I know, I won't be going any time soon. they don't really believe in public transit out there apparently.

I have a friend who lives in San Fran and it sounds very much like the hipster's mecca. but half the population are also gay men and shit is expensive.

what about somewhere like New Orleans or Austin? my partner did a US road trip recently and really loved New Orleans - culture, music, food, swamps and stuff to explore nearby.

the advantage of Seattle is proximity to mountains and stuff like that too.

Anyone been to Lake Tahoe? Is it nice?

I love Tahoe. It’s good if you like laid back chilling. The casinos can get a little crazy though. If you’re thinking of skiing though check in on the powder situation. It’s hit or miss.

A little bit of both. Diversity is very important for me too, especially when it comes to cuisine so that probably rules out Portland.

I was originally all in on LA but logistically it's a truly awful city and not having a true downtown area is another negative point for me. Wandering in an urban downtown area with lots going on is usually my go-to when I don't really have plans on a particular day.

NYC is the best urban vacation destination in the US in terms of things to do. I personally love New Orleans if you don’t mind the smell in the French Quarter.

San Fran is cool. As is Napa Valley and the Redwoods. Can’t really go wrong on a trip to northern Cali. Drive the pac hwy too. Stunning views.

Yeah I wanted to avoid San Fran because of the price of shit. I can get flights and hotels for free but i spent enough in Japan this year already.. looking for somewhere cheap.

Funny you mention Austin.. I was looking at that option since I made the post. New Orleans seems interesting too but I think Austin would be more my scene. Reading a lot of good things about it.. not sure about public transportation but that can always be worked around. Renting a car is an option that I could possibly also get for free as well.

Seattle was first on my list but the warmer climate and additional diversity of Austin makes there the leading candidate right now I think.

Getting closer...

Yeah, I was just in Tahoe. Its beautiful, the weather was perfect (around 0 on the mountain), but the snow wasn't great. For skiing/snowboaring its no Whistler.

NYC is certainly on my list eventually. After visiting a major city in Osaka already this year I'm looking at a smaller more low-key area for my next trip.

Lots of California intrigues me. It's just the fact that everything is so spread out that frustrates me. I don't want to spend half my trip in my car. I see the appeal, but it's not for me at this stage of my life.

And as I said in the previous post, I'm looking at more of a budget trip this time around. San Fran and Northern California is on my list for a future trip for sure though.

I've also heard only amazing things about Nashville. It's the bachelorette party capital of the US, which I figure is kind of your thing ;) (I know you have a partner and all, but I'm sure Gordo is available)

I think Austin has decent transit, my roommate went when we were students and seemed okay without a car, but again this is anecdotal.

I cannot believe you have not been to NYC either. And this is coming from someone who tends more natury than city. Guess it helps that I have family on Long Island.

Nashville is a fun town for sure. If you love music you’ll have a great time and it’s not only country.

Go to a Preds game, they can get pretty raucous at times.

I've traveled a shit ton but the US or Canada have never grabbed my attention. I've been to the Florida's and Myrtle beach's and have family in Columbus (which isn't anything to brag about), and the beautiful Detroit and buffalo of course, but I have never had the urge to see more. It all just feels very bleh to me. New York is on my list though, for sure. I'm going to Italy again next year though so isn't New York just a watered down Italy with bastardized Italian food and annoying Italian Americans who put on fake Italian accents and yell obnoxiously?

Eventually though, I promise.

I'm boring so Nashville probably isn't good for me either. I just want to do a week somewhere not too expensive that's half interesting since I can essentially get it for free. Austin may be the place. Thanks for the help.

New York is the tits. It is uniquely New York, unlike anywhere else (other than Toronto...it's basically a way more awesome version of Toronto)

I’ve been all over North America as well as Europe. I need to do more Asia as I’ve only been to Hong King and Singapore.

It would help if we knew your interests.

I'm not sure if you really want that answered honestly....

Austin is a young and vibrant college town now more than just the state capital. Grab a b&b in hill country for a day, just beautiful. Go horseback riding while in the hill country.

Austin has festivals almost every weekend and they’re cheap. It does sound like something you’d enjoy.

and I say a lot of smart things. I mean, we already knew about feet and waifu and if that's only scratching the surface, I don't want to know any more.

I still have no idea what waifu is but it makes me laugh any time I see it.

Anyway, New York will be a thing after I do Italy/Germany next year. For now I need some Hispanic spice in my life without actually going to a Zika infested or cartel infested city. A nice climate would be nice too.
