OT: Vacations

Anyone ever been to a Panama Jacks resort before? Specifically in Playa?

Thinking about taking the dagos there over winter.

Missed this one...

never been to Panama Jacks, love Playa though. They're having legit algae (sargassum) problems right now though, I'd wait a bit to see how that gets handled before booking. Nothing like showing up for your winter vacay and having the beach covered in brown seaweed that smells like rotten eggs covered in burning ass hair.

Most of the playa beach is completely unusable right now. Cozumel (western side) is fine, and a good portion of Cancun is in decent shape, but there's no way I'd book anything for Playa right now unless if you're getting a massive discount. It should be better over the winter, but I'd definitely wait until at least November to see how things are shaping up before booking.

Terrible at the moment. They tried adding a bigger barrier by the reef but its not doing a thing

The bloom seems to be less in the winter so if you are going to take a chance try then

The Navy is planning to build barge style boats and with the help of drones plan to try and catch and remove it before it gets closer to shore but those are months away

That's shitty. I have a friend going next week.

I did in fact end up going to Aruba couple weeks ago. Great place. Beaches are so nice. As advertised it's very safe. Rented a car and saw the entire island. Was there for 7 days and after the 4th day was kinda bored. Not much to do besides beach hop and go to restaurants. All in all a very relaxing vacation. Would def recommend to go as a couple.

Anyone been to Vietnam?

Thinking of a solo trip.

Great place. Super Easy to travel. It's basically one big highway down the country that you can travel end to end and see everything. Rent a bike or just take the bus which you can hop on and off at will with one ticket.

The north has all the beautiful country you could want, with jungles and opium and all that, and Halong Bay is a treasure. Hanoi is a super cool historic city up top, contrasted with the Americanized fun as hell metropolis of Saigon in the south. And all sorts of variety of experience right up and down the coast - from ancient history in the royal city of Hue, to modern history in the DMZ, to beach and party life in Natrang.

I'd also highly recommend visiting neighboring Laos when you're there, as it's the most pristine nature in the region, while Cambodia is worth a look too.

Amazing. Thanks zeke.

Yep, Playa has no beach to speak of right now, most of the beach area along the coast is about 6 feet deep in seaweed. Some areas are better than other, and some days are better than others, and some hotels spend a ton more effort than others, but anyone coming down right now, don't expect to spend any time on the beach if you're on the Riviera side. Cozumel is in much better shape, and some parts of Cancun are fine, but basically every Playa del Carmen down through Tulum is junk.

Just go to Vallarta instead, Nuevo has some nice beaches. Not as nice as prime riveira maya, but still nice as hell

You don't get the gorgeous water colour that you get on the Yucatan side, but there's zero sargassum right now either. I got back in March from a couple of months there and I didn't see any at all the entire time.

No Spring Training, no hockey. There's uhh a cool retro arcade in downtown Tampa somewhere. The Mexican food is pretty good too.

If you like roller coasters there is Busch Gardens.

Beach
Fishing

Tampa isn't exactly cosmopolitan.

Figured. I'm staying off to a small town suburb but I still might head there a day or two to escape from sheer boredom. Orlando isn't far off either but neither intrigues me much.

Thanks though

Yeah ... Ybor City, Busch Gardens, maybe a brewery tour, Florida Aquarium, the golf doesn't suck. Tampa's a good sports town but there's nothing happening right now on that front. Otherwise it's off to Clearwater and the beaches.

Brewery tour/tasting isn’t too bad if you’ve never done it. It does get old though.

Ybor city was a good call, shops, restaurants etc. If you like cigars they have a museum and several places to get a cigar hand rolled for you.

Ybor city definitely sounds like my kind of thing. Beach one day, Ybor city another day, and likely staying local the other three days is most likely since we're primarily there for family.

Thanks again. Very helpful shit here.

Cigar City Brewing does a very good tour. I agree that those can get old quickly if you do a lot of them ... but the good ones are a lot of fun. And Ybor City is a really good place to blow an afternoon.

Does anyone have a nice recommendation for a hotel in downtown Toronto - October stay - 40th birthday for my wife. Will be a 5yr old with us. We could also use some restaurant recommendations with family friendly vibe to it if possible! Also - if you can recommend any must dos that are outside the norm (CN Tower, Ripley's, etc.).
