OT: Vacations

Yep. But our kids are getting older, so now that is changing too. Sandcastles and jumping waves won’t cut it anymore, but surfing and snorkeling are good. Still, we like to have a balance between adventure and certainty. 🙂

I have never been a beach person, hell one hour on one and I am like OK, I'm done. My wife son and I prefer moving around on holidays so we are on the same page. This year we are taking a Greek cruise (we did Disney cruise last summer) and maybe some time in London. Then in
August, my wife has a conference at Walt Disney World so my son and I will tag along and enjoy the parks while she conferences. Tron ride, here I come...

Never been to Mexico before, and can’t say that I’m interested in ever going.

I’m sure it’s beautiful and there are pockets of the country that are relatively peaceful, but fuck ending up in a situation like this for the sake of a cheap vacation in the sun.

Its the inverse. There are chunks of the country that gueros like us should avoid but most of the country is fine. The only real beach locales i would avoid as a general rule are Mazatlan (where this happened), veracruz, Acapulco.

Mazatlan bro...what were they thinking?

Its crazy how many people still go there . Too close to Sinaloa for me

I have a buddy who has family there (aunt is a local) and the gringo uncle takers him fishing in a mountain village all the time. They have to call ahead to confirm there is no cartel presence in the area first. Fuck that

Resorts are nice, but you lose the authenticity. But man, as much as you might not think you like just sitting around the beach and the pool doing nothing, those days are often some of my favorites.

But yeah, you gotta leave the resorts. Even the good ones tend to have pretty bland buffets, and if you haven't eaten off a plastic plate covered in a sandwich bag, you haven't really been to Mexico.

I'm not a resort guy, but I will happily spend piles of cash to go live on a boat and scuba dive every possible waking hour.

Or, travel somewhere for the sole purpose of diving.

That is probably as close to beach bumming as I get...

I don’t have kids so my typical vacay involves a lot of “work” — sensory overload, exploration, going off the beaten track, etc but I always make time for 2-3 days of nothingness/lounging/reading/napping

At this age (8 & 9) resorts are just easier at the moment. I love the idea of renting a villa or condo and exploring but thats just parenting in another country.

Buffets are bland and monotonous but it beats me having to cook or clean up after someone for a week

i'd love to go to mexico city. if i was a dude, i'd probably go solo tbh but i'm a little skittish.

agree with the sensory overload/exploration part, that's what i crave outta travel. totally get why some people love all inclusives, super convenient, zero work. i can have fun, it just doesn't fulfill me like it seems to others.

We’ll protect the Queen.

Don't live in fear.

USA isn't anywhere near as dangerous as people purport and I've been to Mexico over 15 times already and never had an issue. Generally warm people.

This is akin to visiting DC on Jan 6, 2021.

You dive Belize yet?

I didn't have a problem in Acapulco.

Nice. I've heard less than impressive things from my mexican family so it makes my list. Kind of the same bucket as veracruz really. I know people who love veracruz, but I've heard enough sketchy shit that it's on my list to avoid

This was about 16 years back now that I'm thinking about it.
