OT: Vacations

Swoop ticket is a bit of a lotto play — if I ever ride with them, It’ll be because I don’t care if my arrival/departure plans get derailed, and I can’t see myself adopting that mindset all too often

Yeah my plans are very flexible which is why I'm considering them.

Recently I have travelled on Westjet, Flair, and Swoop. All of the flights were delayed or late departing. The only one that was cancelled and moved from one day to the next was the Westjet one. FWIW.

But I do agree that with the discount airlines you are putting your eggs essentially into one basket. If anything impacts the daily flight, you are kinda screwed.

My friend flew Flair from Vancouver - Montreal, return flight to Van was cancelled (not weather related)... she had to pony up with AC to get back home.

Never been to Mexico before, and can’t say that I’m interested in ever going.

I’m sure it’s beautiful and there are pockets of the country that are relatively peaceful, but fuck ending up in a situation like this for the sake of a cheap vacation in the sun.

Mexico is great. Most of the country is fine. Food is amazing. Yeah, slight chance of violent crime, but overall I think it's worth it.

Been there around 10 times pre/post kids and never ran into an issue. Ive stuck to the more touristy areas for the most part on both sides but even exploring Cancun, Playa and PV at night I didn't find any issues . People in PV I found were particularly friendly

I have stories from friends who got themselves into a pickle there with law enforcement but like anywhere, you go looking for trouble you will find it

Like Mexico, not a fan of all-inclusives. Best trip was Cabo when we left the resort a ton.

Trying to decide on a trip for 2023. Europe seems likely.

Yeah, I can’t see myself doing an all-inclusive trip again. Did some of those when I was younger, but a vacation focused on drinking while laying around the pool or beach doesn’t really appeal to me anymore.

I prefer an active trip (like a ski or hiking trip), or a trip where I’m exploring interesting places/cities.

so I am generally very much opposed to all-inclusive, resort type vacations.

the one exception in my experience was when my family took a trip to Club Med in Turks & Caicos. granted, I was younger and did do a lot of drinking, since it was free. but I was also able to go scuba diving most mornings and there was a ton of stuff that I actually enjoyed that was always available (i.e. beach volleyball, floor hockey, etc.)

now, I don't know that I would do that again in my 30s. and the nightlife was a big part of the appeal for many. it was a no kiddos club, so lots of drinking and debauchery.

we have a Vegas trip planned in March. primarily to go climb Red Rocks, but we'll spend some time on the strip too. first time, got a promotion through Hilton rewards program for super cheap hotel.

As I get old the appeal of sitting on a beach doing nothing is extremely high.
