OT: Vacations

One of my co-workers just got back from a week in Cancun. On his last day there, he was sitting at the swim-up bar chatting with a friend when this jarhead MAGA Texan came by and said "Don't tell me. Canadian?" When my co-worker said yes, the guy went into a tirade about how all Canadians are commie pussies and that if they were in Texas right now he'd have both his guns pointed right at him. The guy's wife tried to tell him to lay off and he told her to shut up and pushed her into the pool. Then he and his buddy kept on berating my co-worker and his friend, who tried in vain to tell the guy that they didn't want any trouble, their families were there and to please take it somewhere else. The entire pool was staring at these clowns.

Someone called security. A 5'1", 100lb girl and a guy in his 70's showed up. Unsurprisingly this did not deter the Texans and they began threatening the security people. Finally this idiot's wife got belligerent with him, asked him what the fuck he thought he was doing and got him to leave.

Anyone have insights on the vintage hotel chain? Have a gift certificate and trying to decide between the millcroft Inn, pillar and post or queens landing.

any recommendations for the Okanagan Valley? specifically Penticton area. will be there with Mrs. WDP for about a week at the end of June before we attend a wedding near Vernon

Got married at the millcroft inn - great property, great pools/facilities and the food at the restaurant is top notch.

I haven’t been there in years but there were nice beaches , quite a few biking and walking trails in the area and of course winery visits for a sip or two.

Definitely get some fresh fruit while you’re in the area. Lots of that around. I lived in the Okanagan in Vernon for a few years, then in Penticton for like a year. What sort of things do you like to do?

We are mostly outdoor enthusiasts. We’ll be bringing our climbing gear and visiting Skaha Bluffs for sure. but also swimming and hiking too and likely visit some vineyards and/or breweries. We almost rented a campervan but that got nixed at the last minute.

Mrs W is also vegetarian so that often limits our dining options

I haven’t done much climbing in that area unfortunately. The lakes in the area are great for swimming for sure even the always busy Okanagan Lake. Should be quite warm by then which is not the usual for bc lakes :)

Vineyards wise I’ve been to Three Sisters and they’ve got some pretty good wines to choose from there. You might also want to check out some of the alternative fruit vineyards around as well. I’ve been to Forbidden Fruit winery because awesome name and they’ve got some good products.

Food wise there’s an Indian place which has great vegetarian options, Lashi I believe it’s called. My favourite when I lived there was Theo’s, it’s no more than a hole in the wall(you will almost certainly miss it while looking). They serve Greek in general but I seem to recall some delicious looking vegetarian options that another couple were getting there.

Speaking of recommendations I’m traveling to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan this summer. Anybody had any experience in any of these countries?

This is about as ideal a time to go to these areas as you can get believe it or not :) I just go off the beaten trail from time to time.

thanks for this! will definitely check out Lashi

I live in Penticton, what recommendations are you looking for?
Best (ie top 2-3) day hikes in the area, best vegetarian friendly restaurants, and best live music venues would prolly be more than enough. We have about a week in Penticton. Will likely spend 3-4 days at least climbing in Skaha.
