OT: Vacations

I usually do my bigger trips in September/October. Also this is my longest trip ever I think at two weeks. I vacationed 3 times in 9 months and I also think I kinda overdid it compared to the past. Think next year I’ll do an East coast Canadian trip.

shoot me a message if you ever make it out east! great spot for a summer/fall road trip

Family (wife and 10 yr old) want a Europe trip for March break. Paris is one must see. Would Paris/Florence or Paris/London be the recommended first duo? Planning likely 10 or 12 days total. First trip overseas for this family.

Did paris/london/Glasgow as well as a Scandinavian cruise about a decade ago. Was a good surface scratch of London and Paris as we did each city for 3 days.

In Glasgow we just used it as a base and went to Edinboro and into the highlands and I would say that was my favorite of the 3 stops (but I also really dislike going from old church to old church on vacation)

Hard to go wrong with those choices. Paris-London might be easier logistically, especially with a kid. Would do Florence with much maligned Rome…

Yeah, Paris London is a lot of bigly big that can be exhausting. Day trips out of the city can offer respite.

We usually combine cities with coast and/or countryside, but you can still get a crush a tourist in those places.

That's what I do. I think Paris and London same trip is too much. I did Paris then went to the south of France.

Doing London for a week then Ireland (staying with a friend’s Irish family near Belfast) for a week. Leaving Friday. Usually prefer fall travel too.

Final report card for my trip, as I sit in the Rome airport:

Venice - Incomplete: Didn’t spend enough time there to really give it a fair judgement. A seagull did steal a tomato right out of my sandwich so that was cool, I guess.

Ravenna - B: Only overnighted there but seemed nice. Had a really bad allergic reaction at breakfast which really sucked but that’s on me not double checking the ingredients before digging in. Pizza was good.

Trieste - B+. Really beautiful city with some interesting history. Got free wine! Not as oppressively hot or crowded as some of the other cities we visited.

Dubrovnik - B: Really cool city with a wall to walk and some GOT sights. Beach was a good time too. Really crowded which was a running theme.

Zadar - B: Didn’t have any expectations but it was another nice town with cool history.

Split - A: Loved Split! Absolutely gorgeous and didn’t feel quite so crowded as it’s a bigger city. Did an electric tuk tuk ride here and it was amazing. Beach was super nice too.

Kotor: A+. Words cannot describe how beautiful this place was. We did a speedboat trip and it was awesome. One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been.

Almafi Coast - A: We did a tour of Pompeii and it was incredible. Highly recommend. That was about all though. It was insanely hot.

Rome - D+: Roman stuff is awesome to see of course and the Sistine Chapel was incredible but the heat, crowds and scams we had to dodge really soured me on Rome. Maybe I’ll give it another try at another time but ugh I’ve never been happier to end a vacation than I am today.

Overall the cruise portion of the trip was excellent and I’d recommend but go in October or something. Celebrity had top notch food and the activities were a good time as well. Rome brought down the overall grade but I still give the trip a solid B.

Agree on Kotor being the best.

In addition to visiting Boston and seeing Fenway for the first time, I also went to Salem, Cape Cod and visited Martha's Vinyard and Nantucket. Beautiful places. My god, Nantucket is rich. I snuck as close to the Kennedy compound as possible.

Did you get a seat on the Green Monster? Those are the bestest
