OT: World Politics

It would appear that many Chinese journos either have short memories or they're crying tears of sorrow, not joy.

I saw this movie back in 1989 and I didn't like the ending. I don't see the sequel ending any differently. At the end of the day, this is a society that has been taught from birth to do what they're told. A lot of these people are going to die but in a country with well over a billion people lives are cheap. The crackdown is coming. Don't get your hopes up.

somewhat cold and callous but I agree overall

Yeah, I’m not going to hold out any hope for a “Chinese Spring” here.

I mean, you never know, sometimes world affairs can go through ridiculously rapid and significant change in a short period of time.

But my money is on these protests just being a blip, and that Xi and the CCP will continue with their iron grip on power.

Yeah I don't see a Chinese spring or anything similar but China is an interesting authoritarian state. The CCP exists in its current state because its lived up to its end of a social contract with the Chinese people. They promised economic development, higher quality of life, etc and they did it. If the Chinese people desire an adjustment to the social contract, they're likely to get it.

Yeah, I can't fathom why killing thousands of people would be a better option for the Chinese government than just acting mildly conciliatory and making some concessions (obviously ones that sound better in theory than what they actually do).

Cut down on the censorship and covid protocols. If people want to watch a few more movies without nonsensical edits, let them. Learn from the rest of the world that (right or wrong) people want to move closer to the way things were pre-covid.

If the Chinese people really are generally accepting of the gov't overall, why risk that for things that aren't that important? Excessive censorship is idiotic anyway. Acknowledge the world has changed thanks to the internet, and adapt.

Then again, I don't know why or how these fascist governments need to exist in the first place, so they probably have a bunch of bullshit reasons for bullshit laws.

reducing censorship controls is a slippery slope towards more freedom, protest, etc.

much easier to control the uneducated masses...

If they wanted that, they could have kept them rural and uneducated. The entire thesis of the modern CCP is that the people will accept control to protect the way of life improvements they've seen over the last 30 years.

And they're right. But the CCP is going to have to give a bit from time to time. Their total control is more precarious than most people think and its currently consensual.

I don’t think this has been reported on much yet, but Shanghai’s largest (state-owned) printing company has put a stop on the sale white paper. Draconian? Sure. Hilarious? Yes. Not quite a step toward tanks on the streets.

The cruelty is the point.
